I've just installed Arch Linux x86_64 on a (relatively) powerful system with a C2D processor, 2.5GB RAM and a GeForce 8600M GT GPU. I've also installed the Kdemod (based on KDE 4.1) desktop environment. The system is most unresponsive. Everything takes a long time to open; the mouse pointer takes significant time to change focus; if I enable desktop effects, things slow down to a crawl. I have configured my xorg.conf very carefully using the Arch Linux beginner's guide, and I'm using the 'nvidia' drivers - version 173.14, I think.
openSUSE with KDE 4.1 runs much faster. I find this strange, since Arch is supposed to be a highly optimized and responsive system, while openSUSE is more known for its bloat than its speed. Furthermore, Kdemod is supposed to be faster than the vanilla KDE, or so the developers claim. I've also installed XFCE and even that runs much slower than it should on this machine.
What do you think could be the problem?

Maybe you didn't add your hostname alias?
What does this show?
cat /etc/hosts | grep localhost

It shows:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain arch
where 'arch' is the hostname I set in /etc/rc.conf.

See if this helps.. try to edit the line in /etc/hosts to this:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost arch

I'm sorry; I made a mistake in my previous post. My hosts file DOES contain:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost arch
already.

Try copying your opensuse's xorg.conf to arch.

nvidia + kde4 = no good atm.
its sluggish, has artifacts and is generally unusable (imho) i have a nVidia GeForce 8800 (something something) and under windows with the right drivers it was blazing fast. under linux (especially kde4) its sluggish. iirc KDE4 uses some functions of standard opengl or something which are pretty nifty but almost nobody ever used, and the ppl from nvidia neglected to implement those functions in their driver because nobody uses them. kde4 and nvidia promised to fix this mess until the end of the year i heard. *shrug*
cheers Barde
PS: you could always use the kdemod-legacy yay for KDE 3.5.10
EDIT: SuSE possibly uses some tweaked nvidia driver/tweaked KDE whileas kdemod(4) now is practically vanilla.

Is reviving an old thread against the conventions here? Sorry if it is, but I just had to ask: I'm installing Arch64 once again on this same machine... it has been running Ubuntu for many months now. Only now, KDE is at 4.2.2, not 4.1 anymore. Heller_Barde has outlined a sorry situation above. Would you say things have changed?

I managed to run kdemod (4.2) fine with nvidia drivers, 185 beta and xorg server 1.6

Hi.
sure you have the wrong nvidia drivers. upgrade to 180.53, they have fixed a lot of bugs.

I don't have the wrong drivers - I posted about having 173.14 several months back, when I was installing KDE 4.1, and those were the latest drivers then (as was KDE 4.1). NOW I'm installing KDE 4.2.2 and am using 181.44 (if I remember correctly). Also, toad, I haven't finished the installation of 4.2.2 yet, so I don't know if I'll have any performance problems. I WAS having problems last year, with 4.1, which is why I asked the question. If I had received overwhelming negative response, I would have invested my download bits in GNOME instead.

In that case you should invest your download bits in Openbox instead.

Sorry, I dodn't look your last post.
Anyway, 180.44 drivers (there are not such 181.44), have bugs, you could see that in the nvidia forums, I had to test with a lot of different versions (stable, beta, prerelease), until last week they released the 180.53, the ones that at this moment hadn't given me any error. I have a 7200 GO.
The problem is not only with kde, is also with Xorg in general (memory leaks), so I advice you to upgrade, but is up to you ;-)
