XDM/GDM/KDM/WDM

I'm not happy with any of these display managers.

XDM:  Ugly,  and You cannot choose at runtime what wm you want
GDM:  Buggy and requires all the Gnome libraries to run
KDM:  Requires all the KDE libraries to run
WDM:  Ugly

Is there anything else?  Maybe just a GTK2 based WM that's light, but not ugly?  If there isn't I'm about to just hack XDM and make a WM independent display manager.

I don't know of any others (besides console login. wink), but I'll support you if you write/hack one, because I have the same problems with the ones you described.

Its quite interesting that there are no decent window managers or display managers... :-D

I disagree with no decent WMs.  That's what I love about Linux!  So many WM's to choose from.  XFCE4, KDE, IceWM, fluxbox... and many many more!

WDM:
http://xcomputerman.com/pages/images/en … efault.png
(dont know how to make it look like this ... found this screenshot over google)

XDM:
very customizable:
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue43/nielsen.xdm.html

... so that XDM or WDM looks ugly is only because the default config is horrible (did i already said that i like eye-candies? wink )

KDM is connected too much to KDE, but GDM should run more standalone ... but i dont know for sure (only the basic libs of gnome needed)

(from http://xcomputerman.com/pages/entrance.html) Entrance is the Enlightenment Display Manager. And like Enlightenment, it takes beauty and customization to levels that KDM and GDM can only dream about, without the bloat.
The site teaches how to get entrance and the needed libs from enlightenment CVS.
I cant wait for the final version of E17  8)

Good you brought up this issue. There are plenty of WMs but very few DMs (Display Manager).... bulky or ugly. How about making an ADM (Arch Display Manager)?.... for both X and terminal mode.

Currently DMs are loaded in X mode and takes time to load. Can a terminal mode DM be made from shell script using the dialog box (same as Arch's installer... /arch/setup)? If not, any other prog. language? Or other type of DM?

Rasat: sounds like a plan!  Would you want to talk some more and maybe start a project?

When working on AIR, I setup one Wiki project site where users can collaborate with suggestion and script. I have added in "Project" one new link "ArchDisplayManager". Those who are interested, to get started, press "Edit". Add your ideas and wanted features (no login or register required... open for all).

PS.
The "<b>User Contributions Wiki - Programming</b>" is currently an experimental site to test if such site would be useful / practical for AL.

Any news on this subject?

EDIT: http://themes.freshmeat.net/search/?q=x … x=0&Go.y=0

Maybe there's no need for ADM, just good XDM themeing wink

I think its gone the wayside.  I had to put my interest towards other projects, and punkrockguy has developed a real life.  He had some code, but never released anything...

Re: XDM/GDM/KDM/WDM

I see that nobody mentioned Login.app, and I guess it's because most haven't heard of it. This is a regular X11 based login manager that is written using WINGS - the GUI library used for WindowMaker. I use it because it's the fastest loading DM i've tried, while at the same time looking decent. It's kind of meant for GNUstep but doesn't require that to be installed. I believe it requires WMaker, though. It's themable, although I haven't bothered looking for themes, I just switched to the "Linux" theme because I don't run GNUstep at the moment.

You'll find Login.app in tehdely's gnustep repo.

Qingy looks awesome, by the way.

Re: XDM/GDM/KDM/WDM

Just a note:
KDM will be themeable in the next version (GDM themes for the start).
Support has already been added to the CVS version.

Re: XDM/GDM/KDM/WDM

Now that I've learned python, I might give this project another try.   I'm pretty sure Dusty is pretty busy with stuff and ensmer, but maybe i'll be able to do it on my own.  If anyone wants to help out, give me an email.

Here's what I want in the DM:
Programmed in Python
Using pygtk2 for windowing library
Lightweight and speedy

That's what I want for starters.  I'll keep you posted how it's coming along.
