HELP: Arch Linux Installation?

Hi all,

Can Any Arch Linux users help me to install Arch Linux. Recently I have dual booting Windows XP and Ubuntu.
Ubuntu is running smoothly and pretty fine but it took much time to boot.
I heard about Arch Linux is way faster than other others.

Few questions are in my mind. can anyone help me out.?

1. Secured system from Internet viruses and hackers?

2. Is it really faster booting system?

3. Faster responsive system.

Re: HELP: Arch Linux Installation?

Before answering - this board is for specific issues encountered during installation. Your questions fall in the "can Arch do this?" category, so you should have a good look in the wiki first.

Any linux system can be as secure as you want, and the applications and procedures used are not specific to Arch, or to any other distro. Personally, I can't say if Arch is faster than other distros, as I don't use other distros. However, many people say it is.

Read about Arch before you install, so that you understand what you are getting into. And remember - Google is your friend, for any answers you don't find in the wiki.

Re: HELP: Arch Linux Installation?

1. Viruses hardly exist for Linux but some scanners exist. AVG has a Linux version.

As for hacker protection, arch is fairly closed and secure from install but you could certainly have a look at firewalls. iptables + a graphic front-end like firestarter (http://www.fs-security.com/) or firewall builder (http://www.fwbuilder.org/)

Finally, there's SELinux (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SELinux).

2. Highly depends on you. Arch gives you a naked base system and gives you the option to build on that. It's as fast and complete as you choose it to be.

3. Depends on 2. Arch provides newer versions of software compared to ubuntu. This may positively or negatively affect performance. Generally speaking, your choise of desktop environment will determine responsiveness on your hardware. If you choose Gnome then you should expect similar responsiveness. Perhaps somewhat quicker because an Arch will generally feature less daemons / services such as beagle and, as said, provides newer versions software.

Lastly... Arch is a different animal, use this:
