This happens with every media player ive tried (mplayer, vlc, kaffeine, etc...) and I cant seem to figure out why. I have all of the non-free codecs from the mplayer website but that didnt seem to fix anything. This is really annoying since whenever I want to watch a movie/tv show off of my HDD I usually have to boot into windows, since it doesnt happen in windows.
I managed to capture two screenshots while it was happening. It will quickly cycle between the normal picture, all red (which I just found out while taking the screenshot), and a red checkerboard pattern:

Try different video output:
gmplayer MOVIE_NAME -vo gl
OR
gmplayer MOVIE_NAME -vo gl2

Are you using a nvidia card and compositing? If so, try updating your nvidia drivers to 180.29 or 180.35.

I have that red flickering every now and then too. At least i had it prior to 180.29, I was messing about the mplayer-vdpau package, so I figured it had something to do with that. i reverted to regular mplayer and updated nvidia drivers and haven't had it since (that i can remember). it was mainly happening with mkv or other video with ac3 sound.
