i think it's under preferences>login. there should be a button installing a new theme. if i recall correctly, you needn't untar the theme, first.

Personally there is no such entry...

Do I have to install gnome-system-tools to have this possibility?

Currently I only installed gnome and gnome-extra.

did you say 'yes' to all? i may be confusing the name of the entry, too. it's in the administrative tab in the menu (whatever it's called. 'system', maybe. usually the last one on the right) and it's usually something like 'login manager'. you might want to look at the menu editor and see if it's been somehow unchecked from the menu.

Re: How to install new themes for GDM?

When I install themes using GDM I first open "Login Window" under System, Administration. I then just drag and drop the tarball into the "Login Window Preferences" window and it should ackknowledge that it is now installed. Once it has been installed you can enable it by clicking the "Local" tab within the "Login Window Preferences" window.

Re: How to install new themes for GDM?

Hello guys,

thanks for your suggestions. I'm not sure whether we're talking about the same entries so I made a screenshot. The default language on mine is german but that should not be a problem as the structure of the options has to be the same.

Re: How to install new themes for GDM?

oh, you found the manager (i thought you hadn't gotten that far). it should be in 'lokal'. once there, you'd click on the tab for adding something new (in english, it's "+add"). then navigate to wherever you keep the gdm themes to install. once you do that, you just have to make sure the desired theme is selected. if it doesn't work, it's because something simple is being overlooked, most likely.

Oh yeah I found the appropriate entry. smile

I had to change from simple to graphical as login method, that was the problem.

Thanks for your help. wink
