Re: Searching for a good file manager

Yeah, it won't show the files in the tree view, and it by no means completely replaces konqueror. But it does have the tree view and spliting and tabs that others don't seem to have.

When using it, I find it easier to have it split horrizontally instead of it's default, but everyone's different. And yes, you can't get more than the defeault 2 tree/ 2 pane, but you can narrow it to the 1 tree and pane by unsplitting, and you can open a million tabs each with the 2 tree/2 pane interface... which is about as close as I have come to finding something to emulate the awesome konqueror experience.

Re: Searching for a good file manager

I just tried something called xffm because I saw in screenshots that it had a tree view with files -- it did, but it was pretty useless. It's not even in the AUR; now I know why tongue

I also use this behaviour to grab long-named files that are interspersed with short ones, because they hilight first when the rectangle touches them (you wouldn't think this very useful, but surprisingly often you do want to do something to all the long-named files...)

Fully agree. That is one of the very annoying things of KDE4, that the whole line selects it. It is too hard to select a rectangle around files now!

But do you know what hideous discovery I made? Explorer in windows vista is like that! BAD BAD BAD example!

Obviously I don't want that in a file manager and am very afraid of the future of user interfaces.

Ugh... I actually hadn't used vista enough to notice that -- or maybe it goes away when you turn off Aero + other assorted crap?

I too am very afraid of the way user interfaces are going... and I'm finding that my feelings there are starting to mirror my feelings in politics. Namely, I'm *almost* annoyed enough by the state of affairs to run for office myself. If I don't find a decent file manager by the time KDE3 no longer runs on anything, I might have to write my own file manager too :)

At least we're not entirely alone in this, but I do have to wonder why we seem to be a minority.

Re: Searching for a good file manager

Greetings,

I happen to think that there are a lot more people who agree with us on the Konqueror3 idea than is known.. just more often than not most remain silent about it. However, case in point, I think KDE developers realize to a very small extent the displeasure of what has happened to Konqueror. They showed this by 'trying' to restore Konqueror's file management skills by including a dolphin k-part.. however dolphin just isn't as powerful and customizable as Konqueror3. Dolphin was created with the sole intent of being a dumbed-down file manager that would be easy for the masses to use, and while Dolphin is better than many others, it doesn't hold a candle to Konqueror3's file management.

Now the claim is that they want to improve upon Konqueror's web browsing engine, making it a web browser primarily. Konqueror was introduced in KDE 2 as a web browser, but it's core functions existed before then as KFM, a file manager. So while I look forward to seeing improved web browsing from Konqueror (something not seen yet) I think it is a crime to get rid of one of the best, if not the best, tool KDE had, the awesome and powerful file management tools provided in Konqueror3.

Right now I am using PCManFM in PekWM, opening several instances and tabbing them together (just because it's natural tabbing doesn't work as well as it should) just to get the tree and to somewhat have nice file management. But I miss Konqueror3. I would love to see Konqueror3 forked off and as a stand alone product. While I think the ideal situation would be to re-write it as a GTK app (not because of any perceived superiority that either may or may not have, but because most WM's and DE's use GTK, only KDE uses QT), I realize this would be a major overtaking and perhaps inconceivable. I would settle with it staying QT.

I think that once we got it by itself, not KDE dependent, then we could improve upon it ourselves, and probably give it a different name (though something like K3nqueror looks neat). I could envision it being basically just a powerful file manager with basic web surfing and ftp tools; but have 'gears' which are basically plug ins similar to the kparts but more so to enhance the forked project. Having things like I dunno... a webkit and/or a gecko gear tat can replace the khtml gear; fish protocol gear; vlc gear; etc... I think that would be the best method. Such 'gears' would be made by the community like Firefox's extensions are.

But yes, I am dreaming. I can't code, so unless someone else took such a task on I can only dream about it, and wish the OP best of luck finding a decent file manager.
