GTK file selector slow in XFCE

I have a strange problem. When I use the file open/save dialog of GTK applications like leafpad or xarchiver under xfce 4.4 svn, everything is sluggish. Roughly half a minute is required for the home directory to load and scrolling is sluggish. But things are much better relatively under window managers like icewm. I tried it out with a new user account as well, but no luck, so the problem perhaps does not lie with any misconfigured settings. Any ideas for a solution?

OK the culprit seems to be xfce-mcs-manager. If I kill it, things get back to normal. But what is it and why is it affecting the speed of gtk applications?

I concur.  Have had this problem for many months but have lived with it.

Killing xfce-mcs-manager dramatically improves the rate the file list dialogue box is populated when opening an application.
(This is with xfce4 as the window manager).

Re: GTK file selector slow in XFCE

I don't think this is Xfce related, but (icon) theme related. When you kill xfce-mcs-manager, gtk will switch back to the default gtk (icon) theme, which is a lot faster than your good-looking svg icon theme.

So if you want to blame Xfce, try it with the gnome daemon first and exactly the same (icon) theme.

(An other option could the font subpixel hinting, this option makes gtk a bit slower.)

Re: GTK file selector slow in XFCE

xerverius is right, the problem was indeed with the Rodent icon theme. Switching to gnome or some other icon theme within xfce fixes it. Sorry for creating the confusion, I did not think that the icon theme would have such a dramatic effect on speed.

Re: GTK file selector slow in XFCE

Mhh, i changed my icon theme to tango, and my gtk dialogs are really faster now.

tango has more "pre-rendered" sizes available.

[rob:/usr/share/icons] ls Tango/
128x128 16x16 22x22 24x24 32x32 48x48 64x64 72x72 96x96 index.theme scalable

[rob:/usr/share/icons] ls Rodent/
48x48 icon-theme.cache iconrc iconrc-png index.theme scalable

if you'd like the rodent icons with the same speed you have to do convert the svgs to pngs with appropriate size and put them in the right directories
