USB Keyboard

Thinking of giving arch a go - but my keyboard is USB which doesn't seem to be supported by the install

Obviously I could use another keyboard - but I just wanted to see if anyone knows of a way of using this one first...?

Re: USB Keyboard

From 0.5 to 5.0 in one afternoon. Now Arch has bested even Slackware in release-skipping  wink

Re: USB Keyboard

phunni & leota: what kind of keyboards do you guys have?  (meaning model, if you know it...)

when the install boots up do you notice any errors (yeah i know it scrolls fast, but look really really hard!! ;-) )?  does the keyboard work in your BIOS (it should but hey you never know)?

Re: USB Keyboard

OK - keyboard works in bios and also when I have the option to boot into either existing kernel or arch-scsi

it only fails me when then kernel has actually booted and there are no errors that I don't get in my normal kernel (it always complains about a keyboard time out - I think this may be because there is no ps/2 keyboard) - I checked for errors twice and looked hard as it flashed by

At this stage there is nothing.

In my present distro - I have to have a module loaded (keybdev) in order for this keyboard to work.  Obviously I can't actually load any modules since my keyboard doesn't work! wink

Re: USB Keyboard

i'd say the devels need to take a look at this ;-) and if you want arch just use the PS/2 and setup the USB after the fact...

Re: USB Keyboard

I think it's a USB1.1-/USB2.0-issue.
1.1 is supported by the kernel, but 2.0 not. Do you have some 1.1-only-usb-ports? (some mainboards only got extra pci-paneled ports with 2.0 and 1.1 on the atx-panel. But newer boards only got 2.0... sad )
I ain't got a solution, but I think that's the reason why lol

Is this lack of support not an issue?  I guess it could be compiled into a custom kernel but...

Is this the install kernel you're talking about - or does the actual system kernel (i.e. the one I boot into post install) have usb 2.0 support?

I think you can provide kernel parameters from grub/lilo (when you choose kernel). Don't ask me how though.

Re: USB Keyboard

Sorry, but I don't know!
I only got 1.1, so I could not test it for you. I could imagine there are to different modules in the kernel (one for USB1.1 and one for USB2.0) and just the one for USB1.1 is loaded, because I remember a friend who got some problems with his 2.0USB-keyboard an the stock-kernel

at the point where i should type arch/setup it doesnt work

on .4 i could actually have my mouse connected to the usb hub on the keyboard and everything detected fine

I did the install with a ps/2 keyboard and my usb one works without any problems in the installed system

Re: USB Keyboard

Help!

I'm a Linux NooB who is having trouble trying to install AL from the Live CD.  I used the regular arch distro and everything installed just fine at work on a P4/2GHz machine.  The problem is that I don't have an internet connection at home and I wanted to install as much as possible from the CD.  My home 'puter is a home built AMD XP2000 w/256MB DDR on an ECS L7VMM2 mobo and 4 GB HD.  I am using a Logitech Optical USB mouse and a samsung usb keyboard.  I was able to install Knoppix, but I didn't like it.  I really, REALLY like the performance on my P4 box at work and I want to get my AMD box running Arch.  My AMD box at home is my daily driver.  I am committed to learning linux and I REALLY want to get this distro to work.  I have been reading constantly for the last month to try and get up to speed on this OS.  I really like the power of linux and want to get better at it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.   roll

Re: USB Keyboard

Now I've learned you love linux, especially arch. But, in fact, what was your question?  smile

Re: USB Keyboard

 Oops!

My problem (one of many! lol ) is that I cannot install from the live cd on my home machine.  I get up to the promt asking if I want to use Thumb Driver User ID, but I can't type anything in because my keyboard doesn't work.  the caps lock light is on, but I can't toggle it on/off w/the caps lock or shift key and the num lock light won't light up at all.  In other words, am I SOL?  I think I have an old ps/2 keyboard somewhere in the back/bottom of a closet somewhere, but I really  would like to use this usb keyboard.  I am trying to slowly change all of my peripheral to usb (except the monitor).  am I out of luck w/my usb keyboard for the install?  Or is there a workaround?  I have usb keyboard and mouse enabled in the bios and they worked fine with windoze, but like I said, I have pretty much given up on redmond and want to learn all that I can about linux.  So, can you help me?  Or am I just a helpless Noob?  C'mon, you can be brutally honest with me.  Also, if the answer to this has been posted, I'm sorry if I couldn't find it.  I searched for the better part of a week and found some postings concerning this, but no actual answer.   Thank you in advance for any help y'all may be able to provide.  And mucho props to the whole AL crew!
