Implement åäö to dvorak layout in X, which is the way to go?

After messing around with dvorak, svorak and everything inbetween i have settled with dvorak, the only problem is that i miss the åäö keys. I write most of my stuff in english, but a little now and then i need the swedish letters. I tend to like the location of the punctation keys in dvorak so i want to add åäö to for example alt gr+'/,/. Should i edit the keyboard files for that, or is it smarter to use xmodmap or similar for that?

Btw, what does the americans use the alt gr key for when it isn't needed for the punctation keys?

Create a .Xmodmap file with something like

keycode 38 = a A aogonek Aogonek

and put "xmodmap .Xmodmap" in ~/.xprofile. You can get the keycodes using xev.

Here's my xmodmap file with colemak adapted to Polish.

Run "setxkbmap dvorak".

I still use it whenever I want to type foreign characters.

Re: Implement åäö to dvorak layout in X, which is the way to go?

Now it works in xterm, but both firefox and openoffice opens a menu or similar when i press alt gr+h or something else. I don't get any special signs for those key combinations that doesn't generate a menu.
I'm not sure that my .Xmodmap is seen at all, in xterm i get hellofalot of weird characters with alt gr combos, but those that i specified are in completely other places.

this is my xmodmap

keycode 38 = a A adiaeresis Adiaeresis
keycode 39 = o O odiaeresis Odiaeresis
keycode 40 = e E aring Aring

Re: Implement åäö to dvorak layout in X, which is the way to go?

kind of solved, i realized that i could write åäö in xterm, with alt gr. I haven't choosen where those are supposed to be so it is pretty uncomfortable, but it works.

It doesn't work in any other place that i know, so i have to do my homework in vi, instead of in openoffice, and to write mails in swedish i have to write in vi and copy+paste into firefox.
