Quote Character Not Correct

I have had this problem with KDE for some time, and I just can't figure it out. The problem is with Konq displaying the " character. A fine example is:
http://www.popsci.com/popsci/science/ar … 71,00.html
The character becomes a block. I have tried different base fonts and sizes with zero success. My system has a region setup because I thought that might be the problem. Firefox does not have the problem.
AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
I am thinking that the problem is just something simple, but for the life of me, I can't figure it out.

Re: Quote Character Not Correct

hmm, that is odd. I don't seem to have this problem.

Do you think it would be possible for you to provide a screenshot? I would like to see it first hand.

My konq font settings are

minimum font size: 10
medium font size : 12

and the fonts are Bitstream Vera Sans / Serif.

Do you have this problem anywhere else in the system. Like in text documents?

Re: Quote Character Not Correct

The problem appears to be when Konq needs to render ' (what I have entered is amp-pount8217semi-colon)
My settings are:
Minimum font size: 10
Medium font size: 12
Standard font: Helvetica
Default encoding: Use Language Encoding

Re: Quote Character Not Correct

Strange, I tried changing my font to the same as yours and I still don't get that problem.

Try running fc-cache and restart x11 and see if that fixes it.
You could try reinstalling xorg and the freetype files.

I'll look into it more for you and post back with more ideas.

Tell me if any of these ideas help fix the bug.

Re: Quote Character Not Correct

Well, I reinstalled both freetype1 & freetype2 and then did a fc-cache with the "-f" to force a new cache file.

Still nothing.

When I fire up Firebird, the page is fine so I am still looking into either my upgrade from xfree to xorg bork'd something or my KDE config has been bork'd because of all my upgrades.

Re: Quote Character Not Correct

This problem involves at least two characters: ' and ".

Normally I would have thought it had something
to do with either the font  you are using or the language
encoding selected.  But viewing the page's source, it
is using 'character entity' definitions.

' is defined as ' and " is defined as #38;#8220;
and " (left-side and right-side quotes).
None ot these three is displayed properly, they are just
boxes.

What is interesting is that the dash '-', defined as
— is displayed properly.

A relevant reference is:
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/sgml/en … tml#h-24.2

But I don't why these characters are not being properly displayed.

Re: Quote Character Not Correct

Well, I hate to say, but I now don't feel so bad about not being able to figure out what was wrong. I thought I was just a stupid 'terd.

The one thing that I didn't mention was that all of my KDE packages as well as qt were built with:
export CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O2 -pipe"
export CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O2 -pipe"
options. I have reverted back to normal Arch packages, but with no luck.

Re: Quote Character Not Correct

Well, I changed my Standard font to Bitstream Vera Sans from Helvetica, and the page now renders okay. At this point, I just don't know what to think. I am open to any idea's that people have.

I even tried adding a new user, and that account has the same problems. Could it be a combo of the font and video card? I have an ATI Rage card.

LANG=en_US

Should it be something else?

Re: Quote Character Not Correct

Well, I think I might know what is causing my problem, but I am not sure I know how to really fix the problem. I switched X to 1024x768, and the characters came back to life!!! So it would be an X/KDE/font problem.

Guess I might give the MS Helvetica TTF font a try, but I am not keen for obvious reasons
