SD Card video editing

My question is simple.  Since SDHC cards are cheaper nowadays than normal SD cards, is there a way I can use part of a 4GB SDHC card and reformat it to FAT 16 to record video from my video camera?  Or is there a more extensive process?

I also wonder if Kino/Pitiviti will edit the format that would be saved on this card.  This is a Canon ZR 600, and I'm unsure what format most digital camcorders would be using anyhow.

Unrelated: is it possible to use xD cards on linux?
