Live USB asks for installation (on my laptop? or usb?)

Hello,

I'm trying to make a Live USB.
So I downloaded UnetBootin and the archlinux-2009.04-1-archboot.iso, plugged my USB in, and run the program.
So far, so good!
Now I plugged the USB into my laptop, booted it and than a setup started, asking my all kind of installation questions.
Whats this for???
Is the Live USB Arch trying to install Arch on my laptop? I clearly dont want that...
Or is this part of the installation onto my USB? Wasnt that allready finished by UnetBootin?

Thanks in advance,
jocom

Re: Live USB asks for installation (on my laptop? or usb?)

that iso you downloaded is only for installation. there is no official "archlinux live usb" in sense you'd like. However there is faunos (its site seems to be down at the moment) and arch-live (isos here) which are essentially projects of some users, and both are arch linux with some packages preinstalled.

Re: Live USB asks for installation (on my laptop? or usb?)

Ok, and can I change my current version into a live?
Or shall I download that other image? And should I use UnetBootin to place that image on my USB?

Because... there are lots of packages I do not want (especialy the GUI ones), that are in that live-iso.
I mean, I was looking for a live USB that was really Arch, in that sense, that it was stripped of every package that isnt really essential and crucial.

Re: Live USB asks for installation (on my laptop? or usb?)

Well then you're using the correct iso. On the first login it automatically runs the installer, so you just need to change to another tty (eg 'ctrl+alt+f2') and that's the bare archlinux for you wink
EDIT: I should add that bare arch is not really usable for anything, except for installing some more packages with which you can actually do some work with.

I understand:
"I should add that bare arch is not really usable for anything, except for installing some more packages with which you can actually do some work with."

But, how do I do that? How do I install them persistent? Should I than run this setup/installation, or would that ruin my laptop smile sad

Re: Live USB asks for installation (on my laptop? or usb?)

OK so let me understand: you in fact don't want to try the "pure arch", you want to install some packages of your choice on top of it. This cannot be reasonably done with the install isos. You need to install arch *somewhere*, and then you can install packages persistently onto it. So, what you can do for instance is that if you have two usb sticks, you boot the installer from one and install arch onto the other (ie use it as a "hard drive"). Then boot the other and voila - you have a normal archlinux installation without even touching your laptop's harddrive.

[It should be added that this is not too good very long-term solution, since the usb stick will get quite some wear, but for trying out and playing with it for a while it's OK]

Sorry for being the devil, but imo, it sounds like arch might not be the distro for you.

Anyway, if you want an arch based ubuntu style live cd, then look at The Chakra Project

OK, bender02 thats exactly what i was looking for.
Btw, Mr.Elendig, why wouldnt arch be a distro for me? I dont really understand and there are no arguments.
You know, I don't want a desktopGUI, so, what distro's are left then???
