Anyone have a good guess as to when ALSA 1.0.20 will come out? I recently bought the ASUS Xonar STX and support for it comes with the new version.

Don't bother waiting for ALSA 1.0.20 just to use that card, the current snapshot supports it!
Just download the current snapshot and compile according to this guide: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. … e-virtuoso
Awesome choice for sound card by the way, I haven't regretted bying it myself even a tiny bit

Since this is Newbie Corner I'm saying this also:
Make sure you don't let the daemonic dmix destroy the sound quality, I got a huge jump in sound quality when i routed mpd and smplayer directly to the card thus bypassing the Alsa software mixer.
I also first used gstreamer but gstreamer destroyed my sound quality compared to xine / mpd.
It would be such a shame to let such an awesome sound card fall due to such stuff, because the quality I get in my headphones is godlike now. It's atleast as good or maby even better than in windows.

How would one do that? Routing to the card I mean.

In mpd.conf i added this to my alsa audio output
[...]
audio_output {
type "alsa"
name "My ALSA Device"
device "plughw:0,0" # This line is supposed to do it
}
[...]
And in SMPlayer I added this in advanced -> extra options for MPlayer : -ao alsa:device=plughw=0,0
The drawback is that only one device can use one sound source at the same time since no mixing is used, but you sure get godlike sound quality, atleast I do

If dmix decreases sound quality so much, wouldn't using pulseaudio increase it again?(that is if pulseaudio is a dmix replacement?)
I really wonder if dmix is the sole reason why everyone goes "oh oss have so much better soundquality" ...

And thus ALSA 1.0.20 was released, so no more snapshots needed for this card.
