[SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

Hi,
I've previously been using Arch successfully on an EEE1000H, but have just changed to a Toshiba U400.

All was going smoothly during the install (following beginner's guide), until I tested X server.

After generating a xorg.conf file with "Xorg -configure", I tried running "Xorg -config /path/to/xorg.conf". Doing this, I just get a few flashes of the screen (like changing framebuffer pre-Kernel modesetting). Trying to use ctrl+alt+F2 etc. to switch virtual consoles doesn't work, and neither does ctrl+alt+backspace (I believe this is default setting under X 1.6).

I then tried testing X by running "startx" with just xterm set to show; this works, but I don't have any keyboard or mouse control.

I've read through the Xorg wiki page, and tried the solutions for lack of vc swapping, and installed xf86-input-{keyboard,mouse}, but nothing works still.

I'm loading HAL first, and wanting to use hotplugging (and the evdev driver) to control input automatically. This is what I'd done previously and thought it may be as simple as repeating the same steps.

Any thoughts on what may be wrong?

Hmm really does sound as if somethings odd with your hal.

Does your /var/log/Xorg.0.log contain any interesting messages regarding evdev / keyboard / mouse?

Re: [SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

When I did a new install a day ago on another computer I had the same problem with runing X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf

However after rebooting from that, I went past that step. It seems that for some reason or another the X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf test has this problem, but the simple baseline test running startx with exec xterm works fine.

So I was able to continue onward and install a de and all the fun stuff, and that computer works fine.

So try skipping that step, proceed to part where you set up your .xinitrc file and run startx and see if that works for you.

Thanks guys.

In /etc/hal/fdi/policy, I have 10-keymap.fdi:

    </match>

    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys">
      <merge key="input.xkb.rules" type="string">base</merge>

      <!-- If we're using Linux, we use evdev by default (falling back to
           keyboard otherwise). -->
      <merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">keyboard</merge>
      <match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name"

I have checked that /dev/input/mice works -- using cat, I get binary input when moving my finger over the trackpad.

Re: [SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

BTW, the machine has an Intel X3100 on GM965 chipset. So Xorg -configure seems to read it correctly.

I've just been following the instructions in beginner's guide, so have an up-to-date system, with xf86-video-intel, etc.

Re: [SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

Weird, according to your xorg log the keyboard and mouse are added and configured (last lines of the log).

You could try to disable hotplugging and see if it works with your generated config. You will need to add this to the xorg.conf to disable the hotplugging

   Section "ServerFlags"
     Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
   EndSection

Denacke wrote:

Doing this, and running "X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf", the screen flashes several times (once with flashing cursor at top-left, but only for brief moment), and no "X" in the middle of the screen.

It does, however, make the ctrl+alt+F3 keys work to switch to vc/3.

Adding the DontZap option and I can quit with ctrl+alt+backspace again. Here's my Xorg.0.log again:

Now, I still get a blank screen with X -config testing, but running startx with just xterm listed, and I get mouse and keyboard support. Mythus seems to have a similar outcome to me.

Re: [SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

glxgears also runs in xterm now too, with good FPS numbers (I know this isn't a test of anything really).

Re: [SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

Does this mean that hal isn't work right?

If so, are there drawbacks to this (sorry, I really don't know much about hal and xorg)? Can I still plug my USB mouse in and have it 'just work' under GNOME, as I have been doing previously?

Re: [SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

Greetings,

I kept the Hotplugging in on mine and was able to plug in usb devices and have them just work. Therefore I do not think the hotplugging issue (as long as you started Hal and added Hal to your deamons and such as stated in the wiki) is the issue. It is just for some odd reason the initial test does not seem to like the new xorg lol.

As long as X works good, I really don't think there is a problem. It may just be incapability with the X -config test method.

Re: [SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

I am having the similar problem. X -config test does give anything but a black screen. startx works and shows three xterms. However I cannot use ctrl+atl+backspace to kill it. The only way to exit is to type exit in one of the xterms. What could be the problem?

Re: [SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

J.O.: From the current x server (1.6 I think), ctrl+alt+backspace is disabled by default. Search for 'zap' on the Xorg wiki page to solve it.

I am curious on why you'd have 3 xterms.

Re: [SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

Try removing xf86-video-intel. For some reason, the new upgrade on the intel driver messes things up (or at least that's what has been said around here). Xor now comes with a driver: xf86-video-intel-legacy that seems to be the one that works with intel cards.

I have a 915GM card and have the same problem. I'll post later what happens when I try to use the intel-legacy driver.

Re: [SOLVED] New install; X server driving me mad; no keyboard or mouse

Thanks for the reply robertoprs.

The issue was sorted, just as detailed above. I'm still using xf86-video-intel (not legacy), and have zero issues.
