[Solved] OSS on new install.

Greetings, I'm a bit stumped on this one. I just installed a fresh 2009.2 and went to setup audio..usually I do alsa but decided to give OSS a shot. my kernel version is 2.6.29-ARCH (did a pacman -Syu after completing user config and reboot).

trying to run "soundon" (/usr/sbin/soundon) fails with the message:

warning: Cannot locate the linux kernel development package for Linux kernel version 2.6.28-ARCH
Please install the kernel development package if linking the OSS modules fails.

followed with some useless info about what that package may be called, and then:

building module osscore
failed to compile OSS
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.28-ARCH/build M=/usr/lib/oss/build modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.28-ARCH/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [default] Error 2
relinking the OSS kernel modules failed

ossdetect -v shows:

Detected Intel AC97 (ICH6)
USB support available in the system, adding USB driver
Detected Generic USB audio/MIDI device (BETA)

sound on still fails after this.

So what do I do? I assume that I'm missing some packages required to rebuild/ relink the modules to an apparently REQUIRED older kernel. Or I'm missing a very simple step. I did try providing the directory structure for an older kernel (which wouldnt exist anyway) for no luck. (IE - I made a /lib/modules/2.6.28-ARCH/ folder...didnt work so I deleted it again anyway).

Again this is a very fresh installation with NOTHING else going on...some guidance would be greatly appreciated!

What forces you to use OSS instead of ALSA? ALSA is the successor of OSS (so it's newer). Also, I think OSS should be marked as deprecated in the kernel.

hmm, i never had to use sound{off,on} for anything.

does /etc/rc.d/oss start error out?

if not, does osstest work?

Did you reboot after you updated the kernel?

I wanted to give OSS a shot since I've never used it before, and vmix seemed more convenient then any ALSA solution

/etc/rc.d/oss start errored out at the "/usr/sbin/soundon" step. thats why I tried running it individually as the wiki indicated. However...

I'm ashamed to admit it...but this was the problem haha. I can't beleive I didnt think of that after the update. I should know better

EDIT: and for the record - loudest freakin sound test ever for the middle of a work day haha. It never seems to end...

You are still living in 1998 it seems, the world have moved on since then.

OSS is by no means deprecated. It also have better support for many card than alsa have. It also have some other advantages, like per-aplication mixing, without the need for pulseaudio.

It also has it's own drawbacks and there's only one guy(?) maintaining it. Btw, you can up the alsa soundquality with a setting in ~/.asoundrc. I'm not on a linux comp now so i can't say how but when i get home in a couple days i can try finding it unless someone else provides the answer here in the meantime.
