Hi, I've done this as said in the wiki
KDE4 look & feel for OpenOffice
OO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome never did the trick for me. A good workaround is to set (as root):
export SAL_GTK_USE_PIXMAPPAINT=1
into /etc/profile. In KDE4 systemsettings, make sure "use my KDE style in GTK applications" is selected in Appearance > GTK styles and fonts (you must install gtk-qt-engine first).
And it looks good when I start a OpenOffice application, but all the buttons disappear as soon as I hover the mouse pointer over them...

You did all that exactly? Try also adding export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome (it's OOO, not OO, which perhaps is why the author didn't get it working I edited the article) to /etc/profile, with and without the PIXMAPPPAINT thing, also try OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde. Make sure you have gtk-engines installed, as well as a good few fonts (ttf-bitstream-vera, ttf-dejavu, ttf-ms-fonts, etc.). Make sure you set up the KDE GTK engine right -- do other applications, like Firefox, work fine? Try using an app like lxappearance to set the engine to the KDE GTK engine.

I have exactly the same issue. There was a qt update today, could that be related ?

Hmm, I had it actually from qt4.4

The gnome mode doesn't work, kde works, but looks awefull. Just like a wine application
But, it works. That's most important

This works for go-oo (openoffice3 from AUR), firefox, thunderbird and gimp.
install gtk-qt-engine, qtcurve-gtk2 and qtcurve-kde4.
go to systemsettings > appearance > GTK Styles > then set the gtk apps to use the theme "qtcurve".

If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

I'm having the same trouble as our OP here. Haven't found any solution yet. Does OOo have a way to start without trying to use a GNOME or KDE widget set? I'm not bothered if it looks bad, just need it to work.
EDIT: typing "export SAL_GTK_USE_PIXMAPPAINT=1" and "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome" directly into the terminal and then running soffice got it working passably for me. I must've been doing something wrong when setting it in /etc/profile.
I'd still like to know where I can put these variables so that they'll be there when X starts.

I really should have looked a little harder. I could not figure out where to put the 'export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome' line. This might explain why it worked when I put it in ~/.bashrc and opened it in terminal....
I keep getting distracted from my webserver project...
huh? oooh... shiny!
