first time running KDE - some problems

I have been using Gnome forever and decided to give KDE a try this morning following the KDE wiki page.  My first problem is that it takes about 40 sec to log in!  When I finally get into the desktop, I'm presented with some errors which I'm pasting below.  Help is appreciated as always smile

Re: first time running KDE - some problems

first time running KDE take some times is true. And in the second time should be fast. What about logout and run again?

Re: first time running KDE - some problems

Try turning ofI think that the Akonadi error happens always big_smile. Mostly because it' still under development (which might lose points for you, being Gnome user).
If it won't happen again it's probably just that a Akonadi "bug".
Also turn off Nepomuk and Strigi, even though they improved from KDE4, but mostly the're still use more resources than are usefull...
(I have them turned on, but I'm acustumed to KDE)

Re: first time running KDE - some problems

Thanks for the replies all.  It is quicker logging in the 2nd time.  Maybe I'm just too accustom to Gnome, but I feel lost in KDE.  Is there a resource for Gnome-converts that explains the UI/features or..?

Re: first time running KDE - some problems

Well maybe us KDE users could help...
What exactly is strabge to you?
OK not used Gnome for a long time, but when I made a switch from Gnome to KDE3 it was quite the opposite, I fealt at home from the begining.

I would say that most important thing to remeber it is use alt+F2 to launch apps (OK you don't know which app to run as you don't know the name, so just check the menu once then it's alt+F2 from there big_smile)
And the desktop is not just a desktop it "plasma" you probably saw it. Just ctrl+L then right click on desktop and click on add widgets and add those that you wish to see.
Maybe some equivalents:
Nautilus - Dolphin
Firefox (well it's more like IE, just better big_smile) - Konqueror
Pidgin - Kopete
Gnome terminal - Konsole; but Yakuake is really good if you need your terminal fast
---
Okular: PDF viewer
Gwenview: picture viewer, editor
Dragon player: Video and CD player...
Amarok (you probably know it; music player like iTunes)
System settings (just that)
