[SOLVED]Archlinux Xinitrc help!!

Hi all,

I am a new to Arch. Though I have manged to install it and configure it upto an extent but when configuringXorg I am a little confused.

PC Specs: P4 1.6 Ghz, Nvidia 6200 Gforce card and LG 775FT monitor, 1.25 GB ram, 20 GB Hdd.

Problem: I have installed xorg, installed nvidia drivers and they work fine. But it seems that I cant configure/control them.

-now when I set my monitor for Vertrefresh to 70.0 and start x...it starts but does not come in 1280x1024 but rather in 800x600 resolution ONLY.

-if I set my VertRefresh to 50-160 it works fine and boots under 1280x1024 only! - How to set 1024x768?

I have set parameters to 1024x768 only in xorg.conf file but still it loads either 1280x1024 or 800x600!!!

Another thing is that if I copy .xinitrc file to root and home folders the X wont start!

Lastly when the x starts in 1280x1024 I want to increase the font size so I tried all the three methods mentioned in ArchWiki but to no avail sad. Please someone help me with three things viz:

1>How to set desired resolution in desired Monitor freqncy (I tried "NoDDC" "true" as well but then X wont start)

2>Is .xinitrc file necessary, because adding it only creates problem to startx, removing it solves the problem!( I copy the file as is from /etc/skel, didnt modify it)

3> HOW TO SET DESIRED FONT SIZE?????????

Havent moved on to install DE WM yet as need to iron out the above problems first.

Any help is appreciated... smile

Re: [SOLVED]Archlinux Xinitrc help!!

That .xinitrc file is used to start DE/WM and run apps like xmodmap and xbindkeys on X start.

With nvidia driver you can set your resolution with nvidia-settings app or in xorg.conf.
Put next line to your xorg.conf in to Screen section
Option         "metamodes" "CRT-0: 1024x768_70 +0+0"

and you will get 1024x768@70hz. If it doesn't work check your xorg.conf and that you have nvidia as driver, not nv, vesa or something else. If it still doesn't work, delete your xorg.conf and make new with "nvidia-xconfig" and then start X and try "sudo nvidia-settings" and then you can set resolutions etc with it and save them to your xorg.conf.

Re: [SOLVED]Archlinux Xinitrc help!!

Hmm I just went through something very similar today, although I'm using the standard 2D "nv" driver.

I found that it helped to bypass xrandr, and use a custom modeline generated by gtf (found this in a 2-year old thread!)  For example, I made sure that the only thing controlling my resolution was my custom modeline for a 1680x1050 resolution at 70hz found with:

gtf 1680 1050 70

See this thread:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=33635

To set your font dpi manually when running just a simple window manager, I like to create a $HOME/.xserverrc file that has nothing but:

exec /usr/bin/X -dpi 120 -nolisten tcp

I like my fonts a bit bigger on a 22" monitor..

Works for me..

Re: [SOLVED]Archlinux Xinitrc help!!

Ok none of the things worked for me...anyways I a happy as KDE can set the DPI of the fonts now.

Only thing I stilll dont get is about .xinitrc file...as soon as i put it back there in home folder the X wont boot...giving error message...but w/o it everything is working in  mint condition! So we dont really NEED the file...right??
