After upgrading KDE to 4.2.3: KDE doesn't work anymore.

After loging in from KDM, the only thing I can see is "transparent" wallpapper, and the 3 plasmoids I had, but with de "X" button to close them, that I can't press -although it highlights when the cursor is over it-. I had "autohidable" panels, which I can not see anymore... Any solution?

I cannot log into KDE (via KDM, GDM) either. I can't remember the errormessage I got (from GDM - KDM yielded no messages - just got a login shell ascii-style). There was, however, something about GlibcXX 3.4 as a missing dependency (installed version of glibc is 2.9-4) or anything similar.

KDEmod 4.2.2 worked fine. This happened this morning after update. Now I'm back to Gnome. Sigh.

I'm back to GNOME too. But I'll try to find out a solution as soon as possible. Now, I'll try getting the latest Glibc version from AUR. Does anybody know if there's a way to downgrade to kde 4.2.2?

EDIT: Seems glibc 2.9 is the last one.

you could try to remove the config files in ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma* and if that doesn't work you could start removing the complete ~/.kde4 folder. But a litte bit more information would be helpful. Maybe there is something in ~/.xsession-errors

I've already deleted ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*, and the only change is that now, the only thing I get is the "transparent" wallpapper -it means that plasmoids were removed from desktop, anything got better/worse-.

I don't feel like deleting the ~/.kde4/ folder, since I would lost important data, important configs. And I think ~/.xsession-errors contains nothing relative to the problem (I've read good part of it.

Anyway, I'm moving to KDEMod -and this problem is not the only reason-, so I hope the problem to dissappear next time I log in. Thanks for answering. If anybody else had this problem, I think we could set it as "CLOSED". If anybody else has the same problem, then we can reopen this.

Same here. Only transparent desktop with X's instead of plasmoids. Deleting ~/.kde4 did nothing. Any other suggestions?

So, both 32 and 64 are affected. Mmm... What else can it be then? I 'm pretty sure other people had no poblem when upgrading.

I got a similar problem with KDEmod, KDM crashes and KDE is not loading. So it is different from your problem that I don't even see the desktop, but it also happened with the 4.2.3 update. In my xorg.0.log it said:

Fatal Server Error:
Caught Signal 11. Server aborting.

Then I deleted my xorg.conf and it started without any problems. The only problem for me is that I actually need the xorg.conf because I had problems with the autodetection of my wacom tablet.

By any chance, did you happen to use a nvidia-card and upgraded the driver too?

If you did, check the dmesg-output for segfaults of plasma and/or krunner. On my laptop (mobile 9600GT) I can't use any driver later than 180.29, therefore I had to downgrade. Of course, downgrading to 180.29 means downgrading the kernel to 2.6.28 too

That's not an arch-problem btw, check the nvidia-forums for a lengthy thread with 30 pages of rants, anger and frustration.

I AM using the last Nvidia driver. Guess I'll use mesa or nouveau, since I don't use any 3D effect or game. Thanks for the info!

vesa driver didn't do any difference but then again, gnome works just fine with the latest nvidia drivers. So it can't be the drivers causing this.

Solution that worked for me :
Install latest qt package (4.5.1-2 for me) and all worked smooth as before)

Thanks DrDeath! It worked for me too. I had qtmod installed (from AUR, I think), so that may be the reason why it was not installed yet.
