[SOLVED] problems with X11 and usb

this is my first time using archlinux. i'm going through the beginner's guide and am up to the installation of xserver before i run into a problem: my keyboard and mouse won't work under X despite having dbus and such on. instead, when i am forced to do a cold reboot, now my usb keyboard and moues won't work in the regular console.

what is the problem with arch?

Check if you disabled usb legacy mode in the bios.  I got bitten by this recently, as the Bios page states this is for "Dos" OSes only, that allows usb to work properly.  Stupid engineers.  It also prevents it from working in Linux I found out.

Re: [SOLVED] problems with X11 and usb

is hal included in "dbus and such" and does it actually start successfully?
do you have xf86-input-evdev installed? did you remove all references to mouse/keyboard from xorg.conf (if you're using hotplugging) ?

You also must ensure that hal starts before X.

hal starts successfully. xf86-input-evdev is installed.

really? you have to remove all references to mouse/keyboard in the config? i haven't tried that.

@Raffles10:

right now i'm just trying to test the X config; when i get that far, i'm stuck because i can't exit without doing a reboot.

Yes, you do.

By the way, it's possible to get out of X when it freezes up like that in a way that you don't have to risk data loss.  In your /etc/sysctl.conf file, set kernel.sysrq to 1 and sysctl -p.  If X freezes again, you'll be able to get out of it by pressing [Alt]-[SysRq]-[R] and then switching to a VT.  Sometimes, it still might appear frozen, in which case, you can [Alt]-[Control]-[Delete], and if nothing happens after a while, hold down [Alt]-[SysRq] and type R-E-I-S-U-B to safely reboot.
