Whenever I start openbox, my resolution flips to my monitor's max resolution ( 1366x768 ). The fonts are hard-to-read. Any way to fix that.

If you have a ATI Card and Catalyst Control Center installed in your system, you can change "Desktop Area" to 1280 X 1024

I tried setting the default resolution in Xorg.conf to 1280x720, because that's the resolution the fonts look normal. But that didn't work. KDE keeps reverting to max screen resolution, for some reason. I've tried editing ~/.fonts.conf with nothing to show for it, /etc/fonts/local.conf or something as I've read in another response to someone inquiring about something similar. I'm really at my wit's end here.
Also, I've tried doing the LCD filter patches, but nothing came of it.
As I've said, the fonts are clear and beautiful at 1280x720, but are horrendously thin and hard to read at 1366x768. And both Openbox and KDE revert back to the latter, forcing me to re-use the former in KDE. I still can't figure out how to change resolution in Openbox.

You rilly don't want to run LCD monitors at anything but the native resolution unless you want blurry output, they are not like CRT displays and CANNOT display resolutions different from the native without scaling. I would expect recent desktop environments like KDE4 to be res independent...
I don't know much about KDE, but can't you just increase the system font size?

You probably don't want to run an LCD screen at less than native resolution, as Hessless says. However, you can safely change the DPI settings on your system so that the fonts are readable and you still take advantage of the full resolution. Here's the .Xresources line I use:
Xft.dpi: 96.0
Fiddle with the number and restart X until it looks right. I think you can change this on a global level too but I don't know how.
Disclaimer: I have not used this technique in your particular situation, so it may not be a suitable fix, but it's worth a try. gnome-settings-daemon (and presumably other settings managers) will override this setting.
