I have a nvidia geforce 5500 fx graphics card. nvidia-173xx installed.  I am using a xorg.conf which looks like:

I am using xfce4 for my DM/WM
glxgears is 2700

I only have 512mb of ram and a AMD athlon processor rated at 2100 and the nvidia geforce card has 256mb of ram

You could have a look in here:

... lots of useful stuff.

Are you overclocking the card ? I ask because I see you
have 'coolbits' enabled.

Not quite.  To be honest I have never used a good graphics card before so I am still confused on how all of htis works.  The closest I have had it the intel graphics card in my now old and dieing laptop.  I enabled it because it said that it was on the fly and could be used only when need.  That was my understanding anyways.  I will check out the website thanks.  Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

Did you not manually enable 'coolbits' ? I find it
hard to believe that nvidia-xconfig did it on its' own...

Of the options you have enabled in the 'Device' section, I'd
keep 'NoLogo' and dump the rest. Just comment them out
and see how you go.

Anywho, if you google 'linux geforce 5500 fx' you'll find
lots of information.

In searching, also hunt for 5200 and 5300. The 5200-5500 are practically identical.

The gears FPS is just fine.

So, you're probably pretty close to as good as you're going to get with it. You can set texture settings and such to be for better performance in the settings app, and search for a few more xorg.conf lines. But, beyond texture settings, you won't get too much more out of it. There's always overclocking (coolbits allows this), too, but be prepared to hit the speed limits w/ hard crashes when and if you try it (from pushing it too fast).

If your main things is desktop stuff (just 2D, or maybe Compiz), and games that aren't GPU-heavy, then I wouldn't worry about any further tweaks at all, unless some app really needs them.
