There are a ton of FPS multiplayer games for Linux (e.g., Urban Terror), but what I'm after is a single player game like Quake or Half Life or similar, involving some problem solving, that's Linux native (and ideally free software).
Can anyone recommend something?

U can run Doom3 or Quake4, u need (probably loki) installer only, it uses original game data...

Not a free software, but Prey also runs on Linux.

The original Unreal would have a Linux port starting with the now-official 227 patch. Details at http://www.oldunreal.com. You might want to wait for 227f, it contains loads of improvements and bug fixes and should be released soon (To be released soon since 6 months by the way).
However, Unreal I is not free software, unfortunately.

Its graphics are very advanced for a FOSS game.

I don't know of any such thing. Cube and Sauerbraten both have short single-player campaigns, but there not really much of anything unless massive progress has happened to Sauer since last I checked.
You could always use DOSBox to play all the DOS games you didn't play the first time around. I'm doing Strife (way cool) and Ultima Underworld right now. System Shock, Shadow Caster, and Blood before that. Up next: Shadow Warrior, hopefully. It's not really an answer to the question you asked, but if you just want some good games, they're waiting for you.

basically anything using the doom3 engine is usable native on linux
as was already mentioned
prey
quake 4
doom 3
all have packages in aur that installs and then requests the extra files that are avilable on the cd/dvd that has the game on it
other than that your pretty much out of luck
i know you are not looking for mp games but should that change
enemy territory quake wars is also avilable

Check out World of Padman. It's in the aur as worldofpadman. It's a really weird game though so not sure if you'd be into it.
Madly in love with Arch64, Openbox, DotA, and of course... penguins!
Happy to help if you're not a Help Vampire. Use your wonderful resources like ArchWiki, Google, and our wonderful search page.

It's not really a FPS, but angband! Problem solving, epic graphics, and linux friendly.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein was great, though i never finished it -- i don't remember if you needed a game key for the single player though(, or just the game data).

I agree, I really like this. It just doesn't seem to have much in terms of thought though (like Half Life); just Urban Terror but against bots (in single player mode).
Yea, this is one plan that I think I'll try out.
I have Half Life and HL2 through Steam, but it neither want to load. Steam works fine with wine, but not the games themselves. I'm guessing it's just wine, and not my graphics setup. It's a laptop, with a X3100 Intel chipset; it runs Urban Terror fine, and Nexuiz well enough with lower graphics.
Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Odd. Last I checked, HL2 worked for me on Arch+wine. That was somewhere around version 1.17, but I don't imagine they broke too much since then. It just had to be started from the steam interface, and I think I had to disable steam's in-game interface or whatever.

The OP is interested in a linux native game that's similar to HL(2). You'd know that if you read the first post
@chrispoole: I don't think there are any games of that kind...

+1 And try doomsday in AUR with Hexen and Heretic (which aren't abandonware though).

I've just tried disabling Steam in-game, and Half Life works flawlessly, thanks for the tip.
HL2 still gets to the same point (about to show menu but never does), but that may be some other issue.

If you bothered reading the poster's previous message 2 inches above mine, you would have seen that he said:

Please don't correct someone until you have something valid to correct, particularly with the attitude.

Damn right. DOS games are the best. Followed by NES,SNES and SEGA games

You're welcome
Hmm, I seem to remember that happening to me at one point.. i think i had turned off the friends list or something at that point, but I imagine turning off the whole in-game interface would have done that already (i dont go into steam often, clearly ) .. do you have the sound from it when it gets stuck?
if so, try starting it in another X session and waiting for it to load, switching back to your desktop x session, then switching to the game and clicking around / moving the mouse around / pressing keyboard buttons. you might also try running it with the directx8 mode flag, which I forgot what it is but you can set it in the advanced options from the rt click menu on steam. note that you only need to set it once; and it will revert all video settings upon loading until its removed as a flag.
If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas atm, but I'm sure google knows the answer. Know that it works nicely once you get it running, however!

Nexuiz rules! It'sbased on the Quake 1 engine (but been totally reworked ever since...) and I find it looking a lot like Unreal Tournament gfx-wise. Considering it's OpenSource I'd say that's rather awesome.
Doom3 runs great on decent computers(I remember it ran better than on Windows on the same machine). No need for Loki installers for it. You just install the Linux binary and copy over the .pak files. Sound was a bit tricky to set up when I last played it (but this was more than 2 years ago)

I totally forgot about that one. Also forgot about Hexen 2 (the Linux-native engine is Hammer of Thyrion), which is a pretty cool game, even though it lacks Hexen's class.

right-click the game (HL2), choose "Properties" and choose "set launch options" and add "-dxlevel 81" (without the quotes). It'll run using DirectX 8.1.

Hah, if we're talking about old games with new graphics, there're also eduke32, Duke Nukem 3D port which has pretty cool 3d graphics and stuff You can get it from aur, but you need some files from original game.
Do, or do not. There is no try. [Yoda]

Unfortunately that doesn't help. I'm thinking that it just doesn't like the X3100 chipset.

Of the FOSS linux shooters I prefer Alien Arena and Warsow. Nexuiz has prettier effects but the movement feels very clunky and Doom-like to me. They are all straight deathmatch/ctf type games though, no puzzle solving. There is also Penumbra, which is about solving puzzles and runs on Linux natively but is not free.

Thanks; I'm grabbing alien arena and warsow, together with chocolate doom, from AUR now.
