I tried installing all sorts of codecs, only to find that totem, and every other video/audio viewer was unable to play my file (it's avi). With totem I get a message saying Divx mp4 decoders are not install. In ffplay, mplayer, and vlc I get "illegal instruction".

The repository of archlinux.fr contains an additional codec pack (codecs-all). Perhaps this could do the trick.
http://repo.archlinux.fr/i686/codecs-al … pkg.tar.gz
http://repo.archlinux.fr/x86_64/codecs- … pkg.tar.gz
Adding the repository is described here:

Still no luck. I also am having trouble with another video codec type h.264. I wonder if any format works. I'm almost certain this issue is related to the fact that I'm using a Power PC Mac.

So were you able to play an .avi file using vlc?

No. No mp4, no avi with vlc, mplayer, or ffmpeg. Though I get different errors. Mplayer says: "error while loading shared libraries: libcap.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". FFmpeg and vlc error out with "Illegal Instruction".
Totem just says that I'm missing the codec altogether for some reason.

Try reinstalling vlc.

Tried that... no luck. Any other ideas?

I had a problem like that, nothing would play.
The problem seemed to be related to compiz, after I switched to metacity as my WM everything worked. I haven´t bothered going back to try and actually fix it

I don't have anything named "compiz" unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestion though
(although i do have metacity)
