sata doesn't work on XFX motherboard

I have an XFX 750a motherboard that SATA is not functional on.  Tried several hard drives, none of them ever get seen by the kernel.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: sata doesn't work on XFX motherboard

Have you tried a BIOS update? The firmware of the harddisk controller is often integrated with the BIOS update. If it's a software bug in the harddisk controller, there's a good possibility that it has been or will be fixed by a BIOS update. I had a Intel board with weird SATA errors in Linux and they were fixed by a update.

Have you tested it with Windows to determine if it's a Linux-specific issue?

Re: sata doesn't work on XFX motherboard

I am having this same issue. Same error and everything. Seems the bios is up to date and windows works just fine. Currently running windows 7. I have pried adding parameters to grub. I don't remember the command now although I do know that it was something like acpi=off or noapci  hope this helps narrow the problem. May I add that arch 6.2008 boot just fine. All the distros with the newest kernel seem to have the exact same problem. Ubuntu, Suse, Arch Linux with kernel 2.26.29.2 seem to fail. I have even tried recompiling this same kernel with the same results. I am going to try the new one 2.26.29.3

You could also try to go to your BIOS and change your harddisk controller to run in legacy mode. I'm not into SATA commands, but it could seem like one of the SATA queries to your harddrive fails. If you run in legacy mode, these commands will be deactivated (and hopefully fix your problem).

Re: sata doesn't work on XFX motherboard

I have gone through this BIOS a million times since I got it a few months ago. I have never seen the legacy mode. In onboard devices there is an option for sata, ahci, and raid. Nothing about legacy. Sucks I tell you.

Re: sata doesn't work on XFX motherboard

May not be of much help but try changing some of the sata settings in bios....

Got a reply from xfx support ticket. they said. you will need to set the board to either AHCI or RAID mode. This will activate the white ports on the board. However, setting the board to AHCI or RAID mode will most likely need you to reinstall windows for the board will work in a completely different way and your current windows installation may freak out due to the change. Thanks, Brian.

Do i do that is bios?? and aslo which one is better?? AHCI or RAID?

did a quick google got

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/57856

or grab a sata pci card and try that

Re: sata doesn't work on XFX motherboard

I guess I will just have to wait for a new arch version or a new bios update.
