Hello together,
i am looking for kernel patches for 2.6.29 or 2.6.28 that decrease boot time and/or lower power consumption.
I couldn't find recent information on this topic so i hope you can help me out.
Thanks,

You could underclock your CPU if it's that important to you.

never heard of such a thing. you can't get much faster (as far as loading kernel goes) as by removing all the unnecessary drivers and compiling all the rest into the kernel.
Also since 2.6.29 (i think) there's a kernel option 'fastboot' which causes some subsystems to be loaded parallelly (so faster). It's not considered stable yet though.

To jlimon: I am undervolting my CPU but i will take a look at underclocking. Thanks!
To bender02:
There was a fastboot project for 2.6.28. I think its the same that went into .29. Bootchart showed no difference in boot speed compared to the arch kernel though. Maybe thats because i did not use the -ARCH patchset or compiled too much into the kernel.
Anyway i am still working on the kernel options but as for the patches it seems there are currently none that aim for boot speed or power consumption.
If anybody is interested: By changing some kernel options like HRES, HPET, HZ and *_SUSPEND the power consumption dropped by 0.3 - 0.6 W (idle). For my system that is ca. 8 % at most.
Thanks for the replies.

I am still using a powertop patch with my recent kernels, although it was for 2.6.26 (it never got merged, since it still applies ).
ftp://nauseamedialis.org/stijn/pkgbuild … 6.29.patch
Let me know if you try it and what the results are . It fixes some kernel timers, that's what I know, but I never really tested if it does save on power usage.
You also configured your onboard audio to suspend btw? Can save a bit too .

I do get nasty kernel core wakeups in 2.6.29 so this really might help! Thanks B.
Cant try it out until next week though because my pc is in repair and im currently hopping the windows machines of my family.
//edit:
In case anybody wonders: I did not notice any positive effect when applying the powertop patch B suggested to 2.6.29.4.
In fact I sometimes got easily over thousand wakeups with the patched kernel although it should be no more than 200 considering the workload.
2.6.29.4 with -ARCH patchset is fine though, as is 2.6.30-rc7 I'm currently using. The last one produces less wakeups and boots slightly faster so I'm going to stick with it.
