awesome WM icon packs
any places i can get a good 16x16 icon pack that works well on the awesome taskbar?
ive been googling but haven't come across any

Don't know of any either, but you can construct your own from otherwise provided icons using the ImageMagick convert utility or its interactive counterpart display on the command line.

Just take an icon theme with well done small icons sizes. IMO gnome-colors is one of the most consistent and professionally done icon themes out there. It features nicely done icons down to 8x8 pixels.
