This wiki article says about the pitfalls of SSD.
But this article and the benchmark says SSD is to go long way.
What is your experience or opinion?
I got dell mini 9 and soon post How well Arch is on this.:P

As far as I have seen SSDs are very good at reading, very fast.
When there is just one write request they seem to behave so so but when there are many write requests then it slows down to a halt.
Also SSDs have a peculiar effect that once you fill them up once the (re)write speed will get lower ... as for durability I guess it's too early to tell.
There are many factors that influence speed and durability like the controller used (inside the SSD) and the wear leveling algorithms.
Check these reviews and you will get a bit more of the whole picture

here's what linus torvalds has to say about ssds:

Thanks for the input. I hope SSD will replace hard disk in near future as more and more features are added up.

i first bought an OCZ Core (MLC) and it was disastrous, gave me several major meltdowns in the first 2 weeks (as in major data loss). replaced it with an MTron 3025 (SLC) and am very happy since, speed is great under every circumstance and no issues whatsoever.

You cannot compare the 'SSD' in an EEE PC - especially the 4 or 8 GB ones - to a mid-market or higher SSD.
The stuff in netbooks is often some flash chips thrown together - nothiing more. Try for example an Mtron or Intel SSD and it's a world of difference. A lot of people agree SSDs are the future performance-wise; hard disk haven't evolved like other PC components have in the past years - they've always remained the bottleneck.
It will take some years before SSDs are affordable, but when ti comes to performance a good SSD now already easily outperforms the fastest HDs.
Litemotiv: OCZ is known for crappy SSDs. They're cheap, they're affordable, but they're crap, in general . JMicron controllers and stuff like that, data loss, ... Only headaches

And you can't compare the OCZ Core drives (JMicron controllers) to the newer OCZ Vertex drive (Indillix controller with 64MiB of cache).

Intel X25-M running ext4 in my main desktop here since a few weeks. Performance is amazing
The "ssd" in my Acer Aspire One isn't worth the word performance

Glad to see them getting their stuff together . COZ has a good name with their RAM, would be a shame to see that go to waste...

I know B, that's the risk of being an early adopter. I was one of the first people that got a Core, long before the Anandtech (and other) tests showed that there was something seriously wrong with the JMicron controller.

Since there are SSD Mtron with a ZIF connector do you by chance know if someone has tested it in the Acer Aspire One? I actually think about buying such a drive, but if there's any experience with it before hand I would appreciate such input.
Edit: I wrote ZIP instead of ZIF.

I can say I have replaced the stock Samsung ZIF 1,8 SSD with an Mtron one, and hdparm 'performance' nearly doubled. The Mtrons get good reviews, overall, and it does feel snappier than the Samsung one.

Tanks for the input! Looks like such a switch gives good value for the money. I can't see why AAO wouldn't get the same boost.

This is of interest to me....

Sorry - I forgot to tell this was with my Vaio TZ, not with an Aspire One. I hope that doesn't make it a completely useless experience for you, but still .
