Hey, maybe a silly question ![]()
But ever since I've started with linux in 05, i've always wondered who pays for all the bandwidth as in where the binaries are hosted and source code. I'm just one user but i've probably downloaded a lot TB's since 05 for free.
I know there's various donation projects etc on most distributions, but that can't be enough to cover all the monthly downloads right?
I know bandwidth is cheap nowdays compared to say 10 years ago, but still i'm willing to bet the most used archlinux mirrors is generating a lot of load.

my Imaginary Tech company, Akhemi Systems(me) pays for hosting/mirroring over 28,000 packages - snapshots dating back since august last year.
.. it costs, um. over £100, i don't remember ..

Some of the mirrors are hosted by universities.. not really sure what they have to gain from it.

Promotion of Open Source Software. Everyone gains from it.
There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

Yeah. Gotta love the universities. Especially when you're like me and have one only a few miles away hosting Arch, FreeBSD, KDEmod, Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo... everything
Hooray for downloading everything at 1MB/s (download cap)!
I would like to know though, where does the money for Arch's main server come from though? I know Arch takes donations, but how much has to be footed after that? Etc. ![]()

Now that Obama is the president the bandwidth costs of all US linux distributions is paid by him. Just cause he is a nice guy and likes Linux and OSS.

If anything, shouldn't Arch be considered a Canadian distro?
As for archlinux.org costs, ftp.archlinux.org is throttled and there have been drives to get funds in the past.

@greenfish
Some sites run adds -> SF.
Some people/orgs do it just because they can :-D
I'm more concerned w/ poor devs, because hosting & hw is rather cheap.

Where did you find this out?
Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.
