recommend a book

ok So I want to know all of the basic commands and functions of linux.

Such as I have been using a program to rip iso images from cds when all along I could have just used the basic DD command. I do not want to download programs I do not need because I did not know linux could do it.

So I am looking for a book to buy. Linux4dummies type thing that will tell me all the basic commands that come with linux and explain how and why they work.

Any Suggestions?

You don't have to buy one; unless you're one of those people that like to physically hold on to something or for reference collection.

Man pages.  Though you have to know they exist to find them...

Agreed - information in paper form isn't required. If only books had a ctrl+F function, then I could see them making a comeback.

Google is your friend. Google.com/linux is even friendlier. Anything that you can't find in those - that's what the Arch Linux Forums are here for wink

Actually man and apropos commands. The latter is a tremendous help to find a man page if you don't know exactly what you are after.

To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

While it's for a different distribution, the Slackbook is too great to pass up.
