Ok just stumbled over something, the guide says you need dm-mirror module for raid1.
This is not included in ramfs, but you could install it by mounting the cd and the reinstall kernel from mounted source:
pacman -U <mountpoint>/core-<arch>/pkg/kernel26-...
then modprobe dm-mirror and retry dmraid -ay
