vlc ignores option to 'integrate video in interface'

I just installed vlc from the repos and I'm noticing that this version plays the video file in a separate window, not in the actual interface.  I checked under Tools>preferences>interface and I have the 'Integrate video in interface' option enabled.  Does this happen for others as well?

Cool, thanks for that.  I emailed the maintainer of the package in the official repo about this.

Re: vlc ignores option to 'integrate video in interface'

not sure if it's related...

if you're running [testing], ffmpeg went through a versioning change from 20081223 to 0.5-1.  any app that depended on ffmpeg>=20081223 obviously choked when trying to compare that to 0.5-1.  a whole host of apps including vlc were rebuilt in our repos to handle this; this vlc package in AUR hasn't taken it into account yet.  best to use the official vlc for a little while.  until the AUR maintainer catches up.

note: i attempted editeding the PKGBUILD to depend on ffmpeg>=0.5-1 this got passed the depends check but then makepkg failed on some x264 function error. hmm

Re: vlc ignores option to 'integrate video in interface'

@brisbin - thanks for the info. I'm not using testing repo at all.  If I'm understanding your post, you're saying that the behavior that the vlc in the official repo is exhibiting (ignoring the 'Integrate video in interface' might be due to the changes in ffmpeg, right?  The on in the AUR works fine.

nope.  here's the history.

vlc in our repos is the 'official' vlc in which they've disabled that "embedded video" feature because it can cause crashes on some machines running kde/qt

vlc in AUR just patches that vlc package to re-enable that feature.

last night, due to an ffmpeg versioning change (vlc depends on ffmpeg) our repos' vlc was rebuilt, the AUR package was not.  BUT if you're not running [testing] then that has nothing to do with your error. hmm sorry.  ehrm, i mean... XiOn's error.

edit: i realize now, that i should have clarified; my post was directed at Xi0n's compile problem.  not your embedded video problem as that is "fixed" with the AUR package.

Re: vlc ignores option to 'integrate video in interface'

@brisbin33 - cool, I'll remove the AUR version and bring down the official arch version then.

Thanks!

Re: vlc ignores option to 'integrate video in interface'

Nope... the one from the official repo still doesn't work with the embedded video playback enabled. hmm

EDIT: oh wait, you meant from the testing repo didn't you!

Re: vlc ignores option to 'integrate video in interface'

hehe.  i think you're still confused.  to sum it up:

"vlc" in the official repos (testing or otherwise) --> works, does NOT respect the embedded video option

"vlc-embeddedvideo" in AUR --> does respect the embedded video optoin, does NOT build/install if you've got [testing] enabled (b/c of testing/ffmpeg)

Re: vlc ignores option to 'integrate video in interface'

I've been using the version from the AUR successfully since I like the embedded interface.  Today I went to update my system but pacman complained that vlc-embeddedvideo requires ffmpeg>=20081220 and wouldn't do the update without first removing vlc-embeddedvideo.  Once the update runs, one cannot build the PKGBUILD file any more.

The vlc-embed PKGBUILD by thotypous works just fine however.

Re: vlc ignores option to 'integrate video in interface'

graysky,

simply put, my post from 4/20 (hehe) now applies to you.  it hit me in april when the ffmpeg versioning change hit [testing], i got your exact situation.  now that the same version change to ffmpeg has hit [extra] you (and anyone else not running [testing]) should have the same problem.

i've left a comment on the AUR page for vlc-embeddedvideo notifying him of the problem (even if you change the PKGBUILD it doesn't build).

like you said, vlc-embed does build/install (although i think i liked the other package better hmm).
