I'm trying to understand definitively how packages progress in Arch. I've browsed both 'staging' and 'incoming' and they seem to be a jumble of stuff. Is 'staging' what the TUs have presented as getting ready to be included in the main repositories (current &| extra) or what? Incoming just looks way confused and I think it might need to be cleaned out or something, some stuff in there is from 2003. Is that just a free for all place to upload builds and packages?
I searched the forum for 'staging' and 'progression' and terms like that but didn't turn up an explanation. I'm just curious how it works.

Wow, this is opening a can of worms.
Current Status (this will be changing a lot):
INCOMING - dead at this point. The TUs don't really look at it.
STAGING - Where packages go to be tested for CURRENT and EXTRA.
If you want a package in the repos, mail the TUR list: tur-users@archlinux.org.

This will all be changing someday (I used to say soon, but nothing happens soon around here  ). Eric is creating a package management system to integrate trusted users, package maintainers, and untrusted PKGBUILDs. Things should be a lot better after that.

maybe farphel is lazy/busy
I wonder what language he is writing it in, probably something that starts with a P,
arch + gentoo + initng + python = enlisy

he is doing some PKGBUILD voodoo

saying that it starts with P is nothing special (a lot of langs start with P), no but saying that it _ends_ with P is another thing ;-)
no, seriously: let's hope AUR is still under developement
The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed.

PHP, Python, *and* C, I believe. I'm also pretty sure he's still working on it and that he intends to be spending more time on it now than he has been. I think its about 90% finished.

Last time it was 80%, there is a progress.
I am also looking forward to see AUR. Farphel did a good job with ArchStats so I am sure he will do the AUR..... not an easy task.
If AUR is a success solving the package issue, then I consider Arch is complete - base system, package system and documentation.

I was wondering where I can find any more information on that, because I have just thought about a few things I would improve on the current repositories system (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?p=55556) and maybe that's exactly what is being done already, or it can serve as some additional hints?

Basically I think farphel has it covered... only AFAIK, its still sitting at about 90% finished.... :-D If you want to help him coding it, I'm sure it would be appreciated; everybody else has been quite content to say "Oh, I'm sure farphel can handle it"

As much as I would love to help, I'm a completely worthless coder.
Oh, I'm sure farphel can handle it.
