arch installation for noobies?

hi,
bought a new laptop for a family member. don't want to wait for ubuntu/fedora etc. releases. therefore i'd like to install arch on the pc. just want to use "standard" packages from core or extra (codecs). so i wonder whether there'll appear problems. i have to do the updates/upgrades once a month or even 1 time in 3 months. is this time period ok for pacman? what is the longest time to wait? (just your opinion or experience)
do you have experience in a same story? is there anything problematic? (besides seldom updates...)

thanks & best regards

For me, regular updates (weekly) seems to work fine. Arch has been amazingly stable with that. I wouldn't recommend an update cycle longer than a month.

Ummm, I think that between the releases Ubuntu etc. do have some updates. I you want to update one a month / once every three months you don't need Arch for that. And be sure to read the news before updating.
I don't quite get from your post are you gonna install Arch on the NB you bought for sb or on some other box. Arch is geared towards bleeding edge not stability so some things may occasionally break. Some of them may be broken for some time. And configuration isn't automagic.

Re: arch installation for noobies?

On the laptop, I usually update once a week, or sometimes even once a month using testing repo, and I haven't had problems yet smile

Re: arch installation for noobies?

I have the same update interval (1 month or more) with my mom's box. At my house, my desktop barely gets powered on so that one went six months without a single upgrade - and if you watch what pacman says, check the frontpage prior to upgrading, and don't -Syuf mindlessly, you should have little breakage to worry about.
