[SOLVED] Problems installing Xorg

I'm pretty much a complete noob, not just to Arch but to Linux in general.  I've used Ubuntu for a few months, and I decided to give Arch a try as a summer project.  Well, I'm failing so far, because I can't figure out how to install Xorg.  I used hwd -xa and made sure I had chosen the right video card, but now when I try startx I get a screen that looks right (a large window on the left called login, two on the right called xterm, and a clock in the upper-right corner), but all the colors are completely off.  On top of that, this seems to freeze my computer, as both the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive (confirmed by way of waiting for the screen to go blank due to inactivity and then mashing the keyboard and moving the mouse to no avail).  I can't get out of this screen without pressing and holding the power button on my computer.

Any help would be appreciated.  Cheers!

Re: [SOLVED] Problems installing Xorg

Using "X -configure" to generate your xorg.conf file.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems installing Xorg

Or you can (if you have nvidia) to install nvidia driver and than do:

nvidia-xconfig

,after hwd -u (I always do hwd -u first), without X -configure because nvidia-xconfig will generate your xorg.conf...but, you must install DE (if you want smile ) and than start X or some login manager...When you install some DE, you can simply tipe:

kdm (or gdm...) and login manager will start...it shoud start...

P.S. if my english is bad, my teacher of english is gilty...or something like that... smile

Re: [SOLVED] Problems installing Xorg

i used to have problems with the new xorg. But here is how i do it after hwd don't do the job anymore (might not be the only way of course). It is better explained in the Beginners Guide if you are unsure how things are done, but a short explanation follows:

- Get HAL started, either manually or by adding it to the daemon in rc.conf and restarting
- Do the X -configure
- do whatever needed if you, lets say, have a Nvidia graphic card
- edit Xinitrc to start xterm and do StartX

This works for me atleast.

Welcome to Arch, hope you will enjoy the ride.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems installing Xorg

Thanks for the help.  I think I've gotten past this first stumbling point, as I have the right driver and I've got an xorg.conf file with correct information on my keyboard and mouse.  Apparently I made a mistake with input hotplugging, disabling it instead of configuring it.

Now, however, when I run X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf my monitor (a Memorex MLT1532) displays "Unsupported Mode," and I get an error after aborting with ctrl-alt-backspace.  After 13 lines of things formatted like "[10f] 320 x 200, 70Hz" is this:

error setting MTRR (base = 0xd8000000, size = 0x02000000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)
error setting MTRR (base = 0xda000000, size = 0x05000000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)

My monitor is a TV with a VGA input that's given me issues before with Windows XP and Ubuntu.  I don't have an extra monitor so I'd rather not have to buy one that offers better compatibility.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems installing Xorg

Another update: running x with startx or xinit still results in my monitor displaying "Unsupported Mode," now with this error message:

xterm: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) or KillClient on X server ":0.0"
xinit: connection to X server lost.

waiting for X server to shut down error setting MTRR (base = 0xd8000000, size = 0x02000000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)
error setting MTRR (base = 0xda000000, size = 0x05000000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)

If someone tells me how to, I'll post /var/log/Xorg.0.log.  It would take me a day to write it out here.  Is there a way to export it or post it from the Arch base system.  Thanks!

EDIT: Confirmed that the issue is with my monitor.  Borrowing a normal computer monitor yields the desired result.  What can I do to save myself a hundred bucks and make the one I have work?

Re: [SOLVED] Problems installing Xorg

You can post your Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf files using nopaste. Install it using pacman -S nopaste then post the file to rafb.net by running nopaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log

nopaste will give you a link to the posted file. Posts on rafb.net only last for 24 hours so you may want to use another computer to copy and paste the file contents from there to this forum, or maybe someone here would be nice enough to do that for you!

Re: [SOLVED] Problems installing Xorg

Thanks dmartins!  I'm using a second computer to post on the forum (I don't know how I'd be able to install Arch without a second computer anyway, at least not with Ubuntu as my only Linux experience).

Here's /var/log/Xorg.0.log when I attempt to run startx on my Memorex MLT1532 TV/monitor:

Re: [SOLVED] Problems installing Xorg

Your xorg.conf looks fine for most hardware configurations.. no silly mistakes that I can see smile

One line in your log file stands out:

(--) SAVAGE(0): No DDC signal

DDC is used to read the correct settings for your monitor. Yours may not have this feature.
It looks like your video card is trying to run the monitor at 1024x768 @ 85Hz

(--) SAVAGE(0): Chose mode 118 at 85Hz.
(II) SAVAGE(0): virtualX:1024,virtualY:768

This might be out of range of your monitor. If you can find a manual for it, it may list it's maximum refresh rate at 1024x768. My guess would be 60Hz. I'm not sure how to fix this. Maybe adding a modeline to your xorg.conf would help, but I have never really understood that whole process.

You mention that you did have X starting up before you configured hotplugging so you may want to try to disable hotplugging again, it could be the problem. The xterm windows and clock that you saw before are twm -- a very basic window manager that starts when you have nothing else configured. If you set up something else like Gnome or KDE it would start instead. There are guides on setting KDE and Gnome in the Arch Linux wiki.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems installing Xorg

Thanks for the help.  I decided to just buy a new monitor (I needed one anyway), which seems to be working fine except for a resolution issue l'll either deal with or ask about in another thread.  Marked as solved.
