Since the intel graphics restructuring has started, after several hours of being turned on characters start getting all corrupted:
I've tried xf86-video-intel and xf86-video-intel-newest, with and without tiling enabled in xorg.conf, and with and without kernel mode setting. It keeps happening and is seriously starting to impact my productivity, once it starts my laptop becomes unusable pretty quickly and I have to restart X.
I'll try xf86-video-intel-legacy, but in the meantime, has anyone else experienced this or know what causes it?
edit: whoops, typo in subject

holy crap that's bad.
You say it keeps happening regardless of driver revisions or xorg.conf tiling options, that leads me to think it may be caused otherwise. Could this be temperature related?

mmm i don't know about the temp, im using an msi wind, with a laptop cooler base, the cpu temp is always between 50 and 70 degrees celcius, but i read that for the atom processor thats a normal temp.
The thing is that i barely use the video card (rarely use opengl or such) but my gf has the same netbook with XP and she plays a lot of opengl puzzle games, so i dont think its temperature related, but driver or OS related for sure, because in the FreeBSD forums a lot of people are having similar problems with this intel cards and the new intel Xorg drivers

Mine's not that bad, but I've started seeing that in some apps. I noticed you have kde in the screen shot. So far I've only noticed this in kde (I'm using the 64bit kdemod), but openbox seems to be behaving. Also using the 945GM, I still using the regular xf86-video-intel driver. I tried the legacy when it first came out, and it didn't work with compositing. How did switching to the legacy work for you samwise?
My laptop doesn't seem to be running any hotter than usual, though if someone can tell me what I can use to measure I can be more quantitiative than that.

Confidence inspiring!

I don't *think* it's a temperature issue, it hasn't been running that hot. Guess it's a possibility though. I ran memtest86+ and it passed, so thats another thing ruled out.
fogobogo on IRC suggested it might be a framebuffer issue. So I've kept the standard xf86-video-intel and removed 'vga=773' from my boot line. I'll see if that helps.
I've found that enabling kernel modesetting makes it much worse. Since disabling that it's been less of a problem.

This is standard vanilla KDE out of the extra repo. It makes sense that KDE would stress the graphics card more. I don't have compositing enabled anymore, it looks pretty but got annoying after a while. I need tiling disabled to get any performance in supertuxkart though.

Just thought I'd post a few more epic examples to keep everyone entertained. It's beautiful, in a disturbing kind of way.

how much ram are you guys using at the time of corruption, it has been suggested to me that high ram use might be related due to buggy memory management.

There, it is suggested to use:
"Option "ExaOptimizeMigration" "off"
You would, ofc, need to enable EXA as the render method.

I have the same problem that I posted a while back (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=71722). Mine is not nearly as bad as yours though!
I'm using Gnome, so it's not a KDE problem.

RAM use might be an explanation. I only have 1GB which is enough, but I've noticed I'm starting to use swap more often with the last couple updates to KDE (thus the experimenting with openbox lately). Thanks for the link to the xorg configuration. I had been using UXA, but I'll see what that does.

It does seem to be linked to high RAM use and swapping (I only have 1G as well). By far the biggest memory hog in my setup is firefox which can use more that 200MB! I think using a lighter browser would affect me just as much as using a lightweight WM.
It's gotten much much better since I disabled the framebuffer, in fact I thought I had solved it for a while.
I'm really skeptical that the ExaOptimizeMigration option will do anything to be honest, I thought they ripped all of the non-UXA code out. It's not in the 'intel' man page. But it can't hurt I guess. I will be looking in my Xorg log for something along the lines of 'unrecogized option' though.
edit Well, the log says the option shouldn't do anything:
(WW) intel(0): Option "ExaOptimizeMigration" is not used

I had the same problem. Changed UXA to EXA and it went away.

I thought the current intel driver no longer had EXA included?

If I don't specify UXA in xorg.conf EXA is still selected by default. I'm using the current intel driver (2.7.1-1) and no KMS.

I also experienced this problem once (with intel 2.7.1 UXA/KMS and a heavy firefox session ). Nice to know where it comes from. I hope it gets fixed
Offline
2.7.99.1 drops EXA
2.8.0 completely drops EXA and XAA

hope this helps the ones with an intel graphics card to solve their xorg problems
if you have one or (as my case) ALL this random problems
- non starting X
- random freezing X
- freezing when using VGA output
- freezing when using an opengl app
- random black screen with unresponsive system
[SOLVED] wanna reinstall and keep an older xorg
