The benefit of using FFmpeg internal? It's from some obsessive-compulsive need of mine to reduce duplication in programs

You don't mind that the sources you need to compile "clutter" your system? The devs are working hard to produce a complete system and look what we're doing ;-)
"Unfortunatelly" loosely coupled apps will always exhibit duplication to some point; f.e. vim uses it's own regexp.
