*Really* Horribe Graphics performance on GMA900 Laptop

I have an old 1.86 GHz Pentium M laptop with an intel GMA 900 and I am getting really horrible 2-D and 3-D performance. I can't scroll smoothly even on really basic websites; the screen takes a very noticeable amount of time to draw terminal emulator screens. gtkperf with 1000 iterations take 580.24 seconds.

With all the automagic stuff going on in Xorg 1.6, what can I do to fix this? Thanks for your time.

I'm also getting this error in everything.log:

I also tried uncommenting the Device section in xorg.conf and adding the stuff it has in the Intel Drivers wiki, but it didn't change anything.
