Safe to upgrade yet? ATI Catalyst + 4850

I haven't done any updates for ages because of the problem with ATI Catalyst drives with the new Xorg. I am currently running catalyst 8.12 with xorg-server 1.5.3 with an HD 4850. Is it safe to upgrade to catalyst 9.5 from AUR with the latest xorg packages? Will it work with my hardware (inc. 3D accel), has anyone else tried it? I don't want to break my system unnecessarily and I will keep using my non-upgraded system until it is safe to proceed.

Well, one thing you can do is backup some things, make sure you have all of your currently-installed packages cached, go through with the update and see how things works.  If something is broken you can go back and install the old version(s).

Or, on the flip-side, if you are happy with the way your system currently is,  just skip the upgrade altogether.

I've been using catalyst 9.5 with HD4850, been working alright until a day ago or so,
when the xorg-server 1.6.1.901-1 package came out.
Hardfreeze since then, have to use radeonhd for now.
