[Solved: OSS]Dell Latitude Sound

Hmm, been trying to sort my sound card out, searched old forum posts here and there, but still nothing.

Running a Dell Latitude D530, with latest Arch build. Now a while back I could get my 'Line In' port to work as rear speakers, that doesnt work anymore. Also my internal mic is ignored, and the 'Line In' port used for mic exclusivley - no options to change this with alsamixer.

So, heres my current stage:
/proc/asound/card0 info

$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Codec: SigmaTel STAC9205

Spiffy, looked it up, and added the following to /etc/modprobe.conf:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m42

Some more info:

$ dmesg | grep audio
$ lspci | grep audio

-- each command produces _no_ output.

modules line of rc.conf:

acpi-cpufreq cpufreq_ondemand cpufreq_conservative slhc tg3 !ipw3945 iwl3945 !snd_pcsp

-- I removed all the snd modules whilst trying to fix this. Autodetection is on, all relevent sound modules still seem to be loaded:

$ lsmod | grep '^snd'
snd_seq_oss            29888  0
snd_seq_midi_event      5972  1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq                48176  4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device          6080  2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
snd_pcm_oss            38112  0
snd_mixer_oss          14388  2 snd_pcm_oss
snd_hda_codec_idt      55732  1
snd_hda_intel          25384  2
snd_hda_codec          60340  2 snd_hda_codec_idt,snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep               6904  1 snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm                67992  3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_timer              19260  2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd                    51460  13 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hda_codec_idt,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_timer
snd_page_alloc          8092  2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

And yet, still, no internal mic, and no rear speaker output. Otherwise, headphone jack works as it should, front speakers (laptop internal) work correctly, and line in works as secondary mic input.

_However_

With the addition of the model=dell-m42 to modprobe.conf, alsamixer no longer gives me the option to select line in or mic for input capture.
I suspect that that entry in modprobe.conf is wrong.

Edit: Tested that, definetly wrong. Mic works when its removed removed. STILL NO REAR SPEAKER OUTPUT! ARRRRRRR!

Is there ANY way to sort this out?

Re: [Solved: OSS]Dell Latitude Sound

I have a Dell, too, but it's a Inspiron. My soundcard has another codec (it's a SigmaTel STAC9228), so I'm not sure if this will work for you. I added 'model=dell-bios' to modprobe.conf, see if this helps. smile

Hmm, is this right?

#cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel          ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
                      HDA Intel at 0xfe9fc000 irq 21

Re: [Solved: OSS]Dell Latitude Sound

Mine returned the same thing:

cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel          ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
                      HDA Intel at 0xfe9fc000 irq 21

I'm out of ideas by now of what might be the problem.

Re: [Solved: OSS]Dell Latitude Sound

Jah, I just gave up and installed OSS.

Everything except Skype works perfectly. Oh, and I still have to adapt MM keys to control oss, but at least it works!

Re: [Solved: OSS]Dell Latitude Sound

I guess there is a package name skype-oss in AUR. Have you tried installing it yet?
