Nvidia laptop overclocking

So I'm trying to overclock my 8600m GT and much to my dismay I find that nvidia for god only knows why has locked linux laptop users out of the 'coolbits' overclocking panel.

After doing my fair share of poking around on almost every laptop overclocking website, I found no leads.

I tried using nvtuner but that also returned some sort of error when I tried it.

What really annoys me is that, under the windows drivers its easy to overclock nvidia mobile cards via rivatuner

I'd really like to be able to pull some more power off this card, but it seems like nvidia has screwed linux laptop users out of this capability.

My question then becomes, does anyone know of some sort of workaround for this?

Also, cooling wont be an issue, and I realize that overclocking a laptop is risky.

Did you add Option "CoolBits" "1" to the screens section of your xorg.conf?
Using that i can access the overclocking panel in nvidia-settings just fine on my laptop (Geforce 8800M GTX)

Yea I tried that, but some of the buttons are greyed out, and when I move the panel it just resets to the original.

What buttons are greyed out? it should look like this (after clicking the Enable Overclocking box)
Also did you try http://www.linuxhardware.org/nvclock/ ?

Yea I get to that screen, but when I try to move any of the bars any forward and apply, it automatically resets them.

Nvclock doesnt work either, i.e. it doesnt allow me to change the speeds either.

I guess you are screwed then and need to wait for nvclock to add low level access to Geforce8 cards.
Or you buy my other 8800M GTX, i dont use it anyway =P

But besides that overclocking usually doesnt do much good imo, usually you wont even notice the difference anywhere but in some benchmark which gives a few extra points then.

Overclocking with nvidia-settings works fine for me. Just overclocked my 8800GTS 512 (G92) from 650/972 to 786/1166 (about 20%). So, I got 9800GTX+ for free
