[solved]unable to start kdemod

Installed -
1. pacman -Sy xorg kdemod-minimal hal

Attempting to start-
1. adding hal and kdm to daemons list , doesn't works. kde attempts to start, but terminates to console login

2. editing runlevels in inittab doesn't works

3. command kdm doesn't do anything

4. starting xinit works, but without kde . xterm xclock are present

If startkde in run in xterm, then the error is - something likde "libstdc , glibcxx not present"

[Solved]help!

Re: [solved]unable to start kdemod

If you could do this:

startkde > startkde.txt

and then post the output.

Re: [solved]unable to start kdemod

Running startkde from console >
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

Running startkde from xterm(after starting X with startx >
/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.5)

Re: [solved]unable to start kdemod

Although the missing library error is really sketchy, I had this same problem and managed to solve it by using startx and ~/.xinitrc.

Try adding "exec startkde" to your /home/USER/.xinitrc, then run startx.

Again the library error makes me think that it's something else, but it's worth trying smile.

Re: [solved]unable to start kdemod

solved by updating glibc
pacman -S glibc

btw could this be considered some sort of kdemod bug, or is this how things work here ? I mean if kdemod needed glibc 4.4 then it should have installed it. Thats the whole point of a package manager, managing dependencies!

Re: [solved]unable to start kdemod

Have you run 'pacman -Syu'? If you don't have an up-to-date system that's your problem.

Why are you getting  so defensive?
unless you don't accept something is wrong, you won't improve.  When you mindlessly defend something , you don't help, you hurt.

Re: [solved]unable to start kdemod

@kutchbhl:
ahem ...
It can be read _two_ ways:
1) If you don't have an up-to-date system that's _your_ problem. (that could be read the wrong way)
2) If you don't have an up-to-date system that's your _problem_. (nothing wrong with that!!)

Seems to me that maybe _you_ were a little bit too quick off the mark as well.

Oh, I'm sorry. Of course you're granted the full possible knowledge so you always act mindful f.e. when you defend your ideas about managing dependencies.
You're too quick to accuse. I gave an honest response to your post, you may not like it, but please, give more thought to what you write.

this also considers your response. In fact pacman -Syu is not cure of all and users quite often are using Ignore flag in pacman as the latest package version does not work.
So yes, you need to give some thought what you write.

@broch
I'm sorry, but I fail to see the connection between your post and my response to the specific problem kutchbhi was having.
Feel free to e-mail me.
