Arch linux boots very slowly on my dual core 3Ghz 4 GB ram system... even windows (when it was installed) booted faster. Is there anything I can do to speed it up? Or figure out why it's so slow? It takes more than a whole minute.

I found out that removing my ATA disks sped up boot time a lot.
So if you have non system ATA disk throw it out.

As it seems something like hardware problem, I know I had one. Even with every posible thing in background it was still slow. then I decided to throw my ATA disks out and now it flies.
Well it still needs cca 19-23s to boot but that's nothing compared to prvious boottimes.

before you try to speed up anything:
see what is slowing down your system:
check /var/log/messages.log
for errors and waiting

my only question about boot speed is:
how can reduce the first seven seconds of starting?

Instead of using the 'sata' hook, you could put only the required modules in MODULES.
What you'll always need is 'sd_mod' and the filesystem module for your root partition. The only thing that's variable is the driver for your disk controller; on my machines for example, I'm using 'ata_piix', 'sata_nv' or 'ahci'. Use 'dmesg' to find yours.

That should work if you have an Nvdia chipset.

I have similiar specs and Arch boots up fine, around 8 seconds actually. Check the message logs like suggested above and see what daemons you have running in the background. I don't have much on my archa and i keep it pretty clean aside from my music and what i NEED i don't install alot of extra's . I found adding special effects like compiz slowed me down alot...my boot time too. So just check that kind of stuff and decide what you need more and can live with out.

nothing happend. I change my mkinitcpio.cong and then run: mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img

Try recompiling your kernel via abs.

it all depends of your experience with linux:
1) re-compile kernel:
- get rid of initrd
- maybe limit number of modules loaded
2) trim down rc.sysinit
3) optimize disk/fs performance (latencies, fsck)
4) optimize kde

I have similiar specs and Arch boots up fine, around 8 seconds actually.

8sec? doubt it with any DE, even without quite difficult to do.

Thats actually it right now...i DON"T have a DE for arch. At least for now....im newer and still working on getting it dowloaded ... i only have wireless and so downloading is only going at 8kb/s max for some odd reason :S. Going to a friends tommorow to borrow there ethernet cable xD.

Along with the huge slow down I also started having errors and stability problems. Soooo...turns out my ram was really bad. (40,000+ errors on memtest) I RMA'd it and reinstalled Arch (in case something was corrupted). Its working great now. But thanks for letting me know about all these great programs, they are very useful. Sorry I didn't post in a long time...had finals and then moved to a new apartment.
