I am using archlinux with newly installed of base and base-devel.
My /etc/rc.conf is :
eth0 = "dhcp"
INTERFACES = eth0
ROUTES = (!gateway)
When I start network using /etc/rc.d/network start .
It showed :
eth0 : hardware address 00:00:00:00:00:00 claims 10.1.24.37
eth0 : hardware address 00:00:00:00:00:00 claims 10.1.24.39

when I start dhcpcd using dhcpcd -hd eth0
It showed:
eth0 : dhcpcd 4.0.10 starting
eth0 : broadcasting for a lease
eth0 : offered 10.1.25 from 10.1.25.2 from 10.1.27.254

When I ping my WEB server using ping www.XXX.edu.cn
It showed:
ping : unkonwn host www.XXX.edu.cn
When I ping my gateway using ping 10.1.24.254
It showed:
connect : Network is unreachable
However, when I use ifconfig, I found that my MAC is right.
I think there are some problem with my MAC of 00:00:00:00:00:00 .
I can not handle it. Could some one talented help me ?

i definately dont know how to debug this, but you should give more info on your hardware for the knowledgable ones...
i do know that macs cannot be 0s (reserved address)
maybe your hardware takes a propietary firmware, and this one is missing? or needs some setup?

Did the network work during the install or did you use a CD with the core packages on it?
What type of network card is in your computer? Maybe you could post the relevant line from the output of "lspci".
Also, check the output from "ifconfig -a". Make sure you're using the right network device name.

Sounds like the right modules are not being loaded.
Post output of lspci and lsmod so we can try helping you out.

bumping every several hours is not recommended.
ifconfig drops a healthy mac for each adapter. thats all i can say, check the wiki on how to setup your network there might be a misconfiguration there

Dragon,could you please post your relevant line from the output of "/etc/rc.d/network start/restart", "dhcpcd nd eth0"?
I'm still puzzled by my output of 000000000000 MAC address.
Maybe your output is the same, or the 000000000000 MAC address from the "/etc/rc.d/network start" is the default format of Arch.

I noticed that your version of dhcpcd is 4.0.10. The current version is 5.0.4. Which version of the Arch installer did you use? Maybe this problem is fixed in a more up to date kernel or dhcpcd release. AFAIK, the most up to date install CD is tpowa's 2009.05-2 archboot. It's not an official release, but it might fix your problem.
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=72519
A couple of things to check:
Unload & load the e100 module (modprobe -r e100; modprobe e100). Now check the output from 'dmesg'. Are there any errors that look related? Run dhcpcd again. Any new errors in dmesg?
Unload e100 and try loading e1000 instead. Maybe the wrong driver is being loaded.
If all else fails, I would try a newer install disc.

ive got disabled eth0, and dont use it to configure my network, i use netcfg for that purpose..
ifconfig -a is giving a good mac, i dont know why you say your mac is 0, from my readings, someone in the network with mac 0s is claiming your ips
you could modify rc.conf to use netcfg instead. check the wiki on how to do that

Dmartins,thank u for your kindly and patiently help. Firedragon and milasch, you are also my teachers.
I can now start the network. I just use static IP instead of dynamic IP, and I also edit /etc/rc.conf, /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/rc.local.
Then I can start my network. I can also ping my school's WEB server now.
Hehe, thank all the kind people.
