I have a separate development box I'm using to try to make my own tiny distro (for fun) but due to some update (I suspect a kernel upgrade recently) my framebuffer mode doesn't work any more. When I booted it up, without changing grub or anything, it said that my framebuffer mode choice was invalid & it offered a choice of various modes. Until now, appending vga=795 (1280x1024) has worked just fine on this little 17 inch LCD. That is it's native mode, after all.
I have tried to re-install grub but no dice and I honestly have no idea what else I can do or try at this point. I'm wondering if this is at all related to some posts I saw about other's issues with the nvidia drivers and being unable to alter their resolution. Suggestions/ideas welcome.
TIA

Try using a fb driver specific to your video card - e.g. I use radeonfb with my ATI card, and I get 1280x800 framebuffer automatically, no vga= parameter required.

Maybe using the six digit code from hwinfo will do?
