I'm running openbox, and have found myself typing 'shutdown -h now' for the longest time...I use xfce4-panel, is there anyway to add shutdown ability to it?

I think you have to be using Xfce's session manager and a login manager in order to have that option when you select "Log Out" from the panel.

I don't know if this is what you were asking for, but you could create a launcher with hal's shutdown command. That way you won't have to write the password, which probably is what's bothering you.
You can notify hal like this:
dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.Hal" /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Shutdown

Hope it helps!

Just make sure to change 'gmessage' to 'xmessage' or 'gxmessage' (install it if you don't have it)
