i get a really wierd error message in dmesg when i insert a disk into my dvd rom

the I/O error could be from the bad disk, but the stuff on top of that seems like something is not good with the drive

same here oO ... bought a new dvd yesterday and insterted it in the dvd drive. none of my video players were able to read the dvd (but it mounts without any problems and the dvd has no errors itself because it runs fine on my laptop). error log looks quite the same as maki's log.

That may be related to the errors you get below, I would suspect a bad disk first. Try a pressed disk that is in good shape, recordable disks can cause some problems (or some combinations or disk + burner + reader), if the problem continues with a "good" disk then maybe it really is a bad drive.

Is it a region coded disk or a normal data disk without any drm scheme?

I agree with R00KIE, make sure if it's a movie DVD it's not a region problem.
