Problems Booting from a USB Stick (no logo)

I used dd to create a bootable usb stick with archlinux-2009.02-core-x86_64.img

Upon selecting my usb stick from the boot menu during startup, I immediately get this screen:

----------

GNU GRUB version 0.97 (639K lower / 2095744K upper memory)

[Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename.]

grub>_

-----------

entering "boot" gives me Error 8: Kernel must be loaded before booting

entering "root" gives me (hd0,0): Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x0

The only thing I've been able to successfully do from this page is reboot.

I've also tried this with the ftp image. My processor supports 64-bit operating systems (I've been running the AMD64 version of Debian), so I think I picked the right version. Any ideas?
