KDE crashes on startup

Hi!

For some reason kde refuses to work for me properly for more then two weeks without some new and exciting error\bug. So anyone who will help me will get my eternal gratitude! (for the next two weeks smile )
Right now after I log in through kdm\gdm, every part of kde starts up except for plasma. (as I much as I can notice) Kwin is up. strigi is up, and so on... but no desktop.

I tried to delete my ~/.kde4 - didn't help.

So, I opened up xterm and ran  ksmserver and basically somewhere along the way I got this -

kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/bin/kmix

Re: KDE crashes on startup

I had to reinstall my nvidia drivers & xorg-server (v 1.60 iirc) and delete my xorg.conf to get it to work, otherwise I had exactly the same error output you do.  My other option was using Vesa (which worked) but its not a pleasant experience.

Re: KDE crashes on startup

I've had this problem too... After some investigation I narrowed it down to be a nVidia driver problem with their libGL that crashes plasma and krunner...

Temporary fix for me: remove nvidia and nvidia-utils, delete possible leftover /usr/lib/libGL* files and install libgl and xf86-video-nv driver. I also disabled kde's desktop effects.

Hope it helps.

Re: KDE crashes on startup

@quanqo - actually I found out my problem was beacuse somewhere along the way I installed the nvidia driver manually, and that left some unnecessery files. wiki helped me smile

So no need for nv or vesa. (at least in my case)
