i feel ashamed

read the front page news concerning the misuse of the arch logo and this really makes me feel ashamed for the arch linux community:

Apparently he received several vulgar and threatening e-mails from members of our community. I am very disappointed that this has occurred; I thought our users were above this sort of behaviour. I did not intend to motivate such actions, and I hope our community can act more maturely in the future.

felt like saying something here and check what other members of the comunity thought of it.

anyway, i did enjoy following the issue on the newsletter, and my first impression was a feeling of respect for the arch devs in charge of the matter. the issue was handled with class, elegance and maturity. well done.

Re: i feel ashamed

It is indeed a shame.

I just started using Arch Linux a month or so ago and have been impressed by the professionalism and courteousness of the developers. That such a bleeding-edge distro can be so stable is a huge credit to the entire team (and community).

It's always too bad when the poor choices of individual members of the community tarnish Arch's well-deserved reputation.

Re: i feel ashamed

The story was also posted on reddit, opening them up to a huge army of flames not necessarily from the Arch community.

Re: i feel ashamed

Mature responses in the realm of ideas are important. I am glad we posted our shame (on our own forum?).

I was wondering what license we published our logo under, if any.

I am also relieved we did not officially change his (the offending logo user) name in Sweden.

Barring the legal expense, the appropriate mautre response would have been a hardy, "Liar, Liar, pants on fire!"

Re: i feel ashamed

Posting the story on reddit and digg more or less guaranteed that sort of reaction and part of it was intended to get the guy to change his mind. It's admittedly effective and I don't think that any devs specifically wanted anyone to threaten him, but it's naïve not to expect a fringe group to go over the top with such a thing. It is fully possible though that the ones who sent threatening letters were not members of the Arch community (also, define membership... is it as simple as installing Arch or do you need to participate... beyond that, (tens of) thousands of people who happen to use the same distro are not likely to be a tight, coherent group, even if there is a general trend towards politeness, which itself may be a vestige of Arch's past as a smaller distro).

The entire thing could probably have been handled better but in the end it seems to have worked out well enough.

Re: i feel ashamed

Well... You reap what you sow don't you?

I don't condone the vulgar emails and stuff, but that guy in question shouldn't even have tried to steal the logo. Yet he did, and he 'repented' - after the damage was done. Only after he got spammed and threatened. There's no benevolence in that. You can't steal someone's stuff and say you're sorry after they found out it was you who did it. You don't get away with that.

If you ask me he just got what he had coming to him. It may not be nice, but you don't go nicking people's stuff. Just because it's on the internets doesn't mean it's yours for the taking.

I have a hard time imagining he did not think about the possible consequences of his action. Then again, maybe he didn't think about it at all and that's what led us to this mess in the first place.

All this is merely my personal polarised opinion wink. And no - I did not send any such emails or threats in whatever form. I only got to know about this today...

Re: i feel ashamed

The guy got what was coming to him. Bad deeds must have consequences.

(Although I agree — whoever spammed him was clearly acting very immature. Would've been better to bring out some good ol' legal ass-whuppin'.)

Re: i feel ashamed

I feel ashamed too. I don't think anyone should receive threatening letters, regardless of what the issue is. I mean, it's just a logo, in then end. This guy is a person. How can he know whether to take threats seriously or not? He shouldn't have to feel afraid of people. And it's not like his business is some huge company. He looks like he's doing what he can to get along. He shouldn't steal logos to do this. But still, he's the little guy. He shouldn't be threatened.

That said, I don't think we should assume that it really was Arch user's necessarily who sent the threatening emails. Certainly it could have been. But looking at the out of control comments on reddit (I had no idea until now what the reddit users are like), it easily could have been someone who just seized the opportunity to do something immature in the Arch name, having never heard of it before.

Re: i feel ashamed

I was not involved in any of this, but I'd rather receive "scary" spam e-mail from random Internet users than get sued.

Everyone would.
Gonna attempt to put this issue behind us all, by closing this and any other threads concerning this resolved matter.
Thanks for your understanding.
